The North Carolina Department of Revenue is recruiting for an Unauthorized Substances Unit (USUB) Law Enforcement Agent. The USUB Agent’s primary purpose is to assess and collect unauthorized substances taxes in an assigned geographical area. This position is responsible for investigating financial assets of taxpayers assessed under the unauthorized substances tax schedule to maximize all tax, penalty, and interest collections due to the state. Duties include reviewing and processing reports from law enforcement, preparing and issuing civil legal documents necessary for forced collection actions, identifying and seizing assets, and levying income sources of non-compliant taxpayers.
USUB Agents are assigned a territory of several adjacent counties based on service center location, assessment intake, response time, and mileage. AGENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO LIVE WITHIN THEIR ASSIGNED TERRITORY. Territory assignment is subject to change based on the Department’s business need at the approval of the Director.
**Agents are on call 24 hours a day**
**Candidates must have an Active Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate to successfully perform job duties**
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Five years of law enforcement agent or officer (e.g., police officer, detective, or deputy sheriff) experience in a specialized law enforcement unit, such as, but limited to, narcotics, K-9, fraud, cybercrime, or digital forensics
Demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement concepts, practices, and theories used in the technical specialty area under an agent’s direct control
Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in applying legal civil enforcement methods
Considerable public interaction skills as it relates to enforcement activities
Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth interviews and interrogations
Recruitment Range: $55,704 - $94,697

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience as a revenue law enforcement agent; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Note: Selected candidate must be qualified for certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.EEO Statement
