Description
- Principles, procedures, techniques and trends related to counseling, therapy, and guidance of individuals, groups, and families in mental health programs, and/or including alcohol and drug treatment and prevention programs.

- Learn and perform a variety of mental health services, including alcohol and drug abuse recovery support services with individual clients and groups, as assigned.

- Learn to interview clients for services, developing initial assessments.
- Develop and maintain cooperative, constructive relationships with families of clients, members of professional disciplines, social agencies and other staff.
- Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive casework records and make sound recommendations.
- Learn to develop and implement client case management services.
- Learn to analyze case information, reaching sound diagnostic and treatment decisions.
- Effectively counsel clients, groups, and families.
- Maintain the confidentiality of case information.
- Recognize a potential crisis and deliver crisis intervention services.
- Handle stress and unusual client behavior.
- Effectively represent the County Behavioral Health Department with the public, community organizations, other County staff, and other government agencies.
- Completion of college courses in a behavioral or social science area, including, but not limited to Addiction, Psychology, Sociology, Recreation, Child Care, Social Work, Counseling, and related fields.
- Some previous experience in providing case management in behavioral health program services is desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry and first working level in the Behavioral Health Case Manager class series. Incumbents learn methods, procedures and policies and perform basic assignments in providing direct and support services. They work with individuals, couples, families, or groups, as appropriate. When incumbents have demonstrated sufficient work skills and gained two years of experience, they are eligible for promotion to the Behavioral Health Case Manager II level. This class is distinguished from Behavioral Health Case Manager II in that Behavioral Health Case Manager II incumbents are expected to provide a broader array of client support services and be responsible for an assigned specialty area.

Behavioral Health Deputy Director – Adult Services and Substance Abuse or Substance Abuse Specialist III.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
In addition to our everyday duties, we have an added responsibility to help in a declared disaster. Under California law, all public employees are Disaster Service Workers and may be called upon in the event of a disaster. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Government Code 3100-3102; Labor Code 3211.92(b).
