Description
Digital news student worker, NEWSWELL
NEWSWELL is seeking creative, adaptable, self-starting student workers to support a wide range of editorial and digital tasks across our network of community newsrooms. This role is ideal for students interested in digital media, community journalism and audience engagement who want hands-on experience working with multiple editors and wearing many hats in a fast-moving newsroom environment.
NEWSWELL’s network encompasses the Times of San Diego, Stocktonia, the Santa Barbara News-Press and four Chicago-area publications. Your work will include writing short community stories and briefs; supporting our social media team with content creation, paid search and Google Ads; and helping publish stories across our websites. You will collaborate with editors, reporters and audience staff to ensure our journalism is accurate, accessible and engaging.
Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at Arizona State University. Preference will be given to more advanced students.
This position pays $20 per hour for up to 16 hours per week. Remote work is available, with occasional in-person meetings or coaching sessions in downtown Phoenix. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate classes, and the role uses standard newsroom and cloud-based tools.

What you’ll do
Writing community briefs and short stories with clarity and accuracy
Producing and publishing stories in WordPress, including formatting and multimedia selection
Selecting and editing photos and assembling clean, accurate story pages using multimedia and embeds
Reviewing partner content and preparing stories for publication with SEO-friendly headlines and summaries
Ensuring stories meet editorial standards and are presented clearly and attractively
Supporting paid social, search and Google Ads in coordination with our digital audience team
Creating content for NEWSWELL’s main social media and newsletter accounts as needed, including videos, graphics and text
Other tasks as assigned, depending on newsroom needs and your interests
In this role, you will also have opportunities to learn newsroom workflows, accessibility principles and audience-focused digital strategy.
What you'll need
Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to produce clear and accurate community briefs and short stories
Ability to publish stories in WordPress and format pages with clean presentation
Basic photo selection and editing skills, with an eye for accuracy and relevance
Ability to write headlines and summaries that follow SEO best practices
Comfort assembling story pages that use multimedia elements and embeds
Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting editorial standards
Ability to review partner content and prepare it for publication
Willingness to learn newsroom workflows, accessibility principles and audience-focused digital strategy
Ability to work with multiple editors across different properties and adapt to varied workflows
Strong organizational skills and the ability to switch between tasks efficiently
Curiosity, reliability and a collaborative approach to problem-solving
Familiarity with social media content creation and best practices
Relevant qualifications
Enrolled student at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University
Preferred skills and abilities
Spanish fluency is a plus
Experience using programs including Google and Meta Ads, Canva, WordPress and Google and Microsoft products
Familiarity with Google tag manager, AdSense and Ad Manager
