This is a benefits-eligible position

PUSD Classification Salary Range: $25.53 - $32.67 per hour

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $25.53 per hour (step 1) - $29.60 per hour (step 4)

Limited Term (Sub) Salary: $25.53 per hour (step 1)


Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened, and those candidates whose backgrounds best match the requirements of the position will be invited to participate in a competitive examination process, which may include any combination of the following: Training & Experience evaluation (T&E), multiple-choice question test, job-related performance exercise, and technical/ oral appraisal interview. Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director of the Personnel Commission.

Candidates who pass all examination processes are ranked on an eligibility list based on their score(s). Selection for the position will be made from among the top three (3) ranks of candidates.  The eligibility list will be used for hiring purposes for other vacancies in the same or equivalent job classification and will be active for six (6) months (Merit Rule 50.100.1).

BASIC FUNCTION: 
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Finance, perform responsible accounting work for an assigned set of complex accounts; provide work direction and guidance to others; maintain accounts and produce financial statements for assigned programs.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Accounting Assistant IV class performs accounting clerical work in support of more complex accounts requiring independent judgment and knowledge of District operations. The incumbents may provide work direction and guidance to others as assigned. The Accounting Assistant I classification is the entry-level class and performs routine accounting clerical work under close supervision. Incumbents perform other clerical duties in support of office activities. The Accounting Assistant II classification performs accounting clerical work in support of assigned accounts of moderate complexity such as accounts payable or supports other accounting personnel in programs such as Food Service and Extended Student Services. The Accounting Assistant III class performs clerical work on more difficult accounts such as the revolving cash funds.
Perform accounts payable work for complex and specialized accounts such as construction contracts, professional service contracts, contracts and lease agreements and others; assure accurate and timely payment of invoices in accordance with agreements and District policy. E
 
Provide accounting support to such programs as Extended Student Services; account for revenues and expenditures and provide accurate and timely financial reporting; audit receipts, prepare accounts payable and provide special accounting reports as required for the assigned program. E
 
Provide accounting for District receivables including checks and cash from schools and outside agencies; monitor various ASB accounts; prepare journal entries and maintain records of cash transfers; maintain accounts for various special projects and programs. E
 
Provide accounting for ASB funds at a school site including accounting for clubs and other activities; prepare periodic financial reports and maintain auditable records; authorize payments, maintain cash accounts and coordinate accounting services with students and administrators. E
 
Maintain auditable records and files regarding assigned activity and program. E
 
Provide work direction and guidance to accounting clerical personnel as assigned; serve as a technical resource to other staff members on assigned accounts. E
 
Coordinate accounting aspects of assigned programs with other district and school personnel to resolve discrepancies or issues, provide periodic accounting updates and to offer analysis based on account monitoring. E

 Maintain contact with vendors, consultants and other providers of services with respect to assigned set of accounts or programs. E
 
Perform related duties as assigned.

Two years college-level course work in accounting and three years of accounting clerical experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Accounting principles and procedures.
Methods and practices of financial record-keeping.
Data entry devices, care and use.
Start-up techniques for data entry devices to perform specific functions.
Office practices and procedures including basic functions of computer operations, scheduling and job flow.
Bookkeeping methods and terminology.
Financial and statistical record-keeping techniques.
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
 
ABILITY TO:
Perform accounting clerical work without immediate supervision.
Make mathematical computations with speed and accuracy.
Prepare accurate financial reports.
Operate office machines.
Type with accuracy.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate effectively with District employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Seeing to read, review, and assure accuracy of financial statements and reports.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
Sitting for extended periods of time.

In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 (Minimum Salary) of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in and shall be carried out in accordance with this rule.
