Description
An established, privately held commercial real estate ownership and development company is looking for a hands-on Controller. The portfolio includes grocery-anchored retail centers, restaurants, and mixed-use properties, plus an affiliated development company. The company is planning for succession in its accounting team, so this is a long-term opportunity.
This is a hands-on role. You'll be the company's only accountant, doing the work yourself rather than reviewing a team's. It suits someone from a private company, or from a public company who wants a change, more than a big-picture CFO used to staff support.
What you'll do:
- Own full-cycle accounting, month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Prepare owner and investor reporting, partnership allocations, and capital account reconciliations
- Run waterfall calculations, preferred returns, and investor distributions
- Handle CAM reconciliations, property expenses, and tenant recoveries
- Support development accounting, construction-in-progress, and intercompany transactions
- Support partnership tax work and review real estate legal documents (leases, acquisitions, sales)
- Work closely with ownership through the succession process
What we're looking for:
- Bachelor's in Accounting; CPA strongly preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in commercial real estate
- Partnership accounting and partnership tax experience
- Comfort with real estate legal documents: leases, acquisitions, and dispositions
- Yardi or MRI, plus advanced Excel
- Public accounting background a plus
Compensation: $220,000 – $250,000 base, depending on background.
