Senior Software Engineer (Python / GenAI) – Markets Technology

Citi’s Markets Technology group is modernizing financial risk management, and we are seeking an experienced Senior Python Engineer to sit at the center of that evolution. In this role, you will architect and scale robust backend systems, leveraging Generative AI to analyze massive volumes of unstructured financial communication - extracting trading signals, validating market behavior, and enhancing critical risk controls across Citi’s global markets infrastructure.

This is a high-impact, hands-on engineering position (~80% coding) where your technical contributions will directly influence next-generation risk and intelligence platforms at global enterprise scale.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement advanced risk detection and analytics algorithms on Citi’s strategic platforms, integrating Generative AI foundational models to evaluate market activity and derive actionable intelligence from multimodal data (chat, voice, transcripts).
• Apply advanced prompt engineering, token usage optimization, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to develop efficient, production-grade solutions using Citi's proprietary data at scale.
• Architect, build, and deploy resilient, distributed backend services and high-performance APIs across Kubernetes-orchestrated infrastructure.
• Continuously research, benchmark, and integrate emerging LLM/GenAI paradigms, libraries, and frameworks to elevate platform capabilities and engineering velocity.
• Partner with quantitative analysts, product owners, risk managers, and compliance teams to roll out features across platforms governing hundreds of risk controls.
• Deliver clean, modular, and maintainable software backed by comprehensive unit testing, rigorous peer code reviews, and automated CI/CD pipelines.
• Author and maintain architectural blueprints, system diagrams, and technical documentation to foster reliability and team-wide technical excellence.

 

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 4+ years of professional experience in Python for backend development, with the ability to design and build scalable, high-performance systems.
• Hands-on experience applying Generative AI foundational models in production environments, with demonstrated expertise in prompt engineering and token usage optimization.
• Practical knowledge of Kubernetes for deploying and operating scalable backend platforms and engineering high-performance APIs.
• Solid command of software engineering fundamentals, including system design, data structures, and algorithms.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver across multiple workstreams without close direction.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.

 

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Exposure to processing and deriving insights from large volumes of unstructured or conversational data.
• Preferred experience working in financial services or banking, with familiarity with trading workflows, market data, or financial risk concepts.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders around shared goals.
• Experience working across international, cross-functional teams and contributing to collaborative platform delivery.
