Brentwood Water Services Department

 

Starting Compensation Includes:

 

  • Maintenance Technician level: $20.63/hour base pay ($42,910.40 annually).
  • Senior Maintenance Technician level: $23.12/hour base pay ($48,089.60 annually).
  • $2,000 annual transportation allowance, paid over 26 pay periods.
  • $2,000 annual CDL supplement for eligible employees, paid over 26 pay periods.
  • Up to a 5% salary increase upon successful completion of a six-month probationary period.

 

This position will remain open until filled or until November 30, 2026, whichever occurs first.

 

The City of Brentwood is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and team-oriented individual to join its Water Services team as a Water & Sewer Technician. Help install, maintain, and repair the water and sewer systems that serve Brentwood residents and businesses, including utility lines, service connections, meters, hydrants, grinder systems, and related equipment.


This is hands-on, physically active outdoor work and an opportunity to build a stable, long-term career maintaining essential public infrastructure. Candidates may be hired at the Maintenance Technician or Senior Maintenance Technician level based on their qualifications.


The Water Services Department maintains more than 225 miles of water lines, 13 pump stations, and nine finished-water storage tanks with a total capacity of 14 million gallons. As a member of this team, your work will have a direct and lasting impact on Brentwood residents and businesses.


The City of Brentwood is located in scenic Williamson County, just south of Nashville, and is consistently recognized as one of the most desirable suburban communities in Tennessee.


  • Install, maintain, and repair water and sewer lines, including pipes, fittings, service connections, meters, hydrants, and grinder systems.
  • Assist with maintenance of pump stations, department property, easements, and related work areas.
  • Operate and help maintain vehicles, equipment, and tools used in water and sewer system operations.
  • Collect system data, including pressure, flow, and chlorine readings.
  • Perform heavy manual labor, including digging, handling pipe and materials, and supporting repair and maintenance projects.
  • Complete work orders, reports, and related documentation using department systems.

Employees hired at the Senior level also:

  • Assist the Operations Superintendent with daily activities and provide leadership in the Superintendent’s absence.
  • Diagnose system problems; inspect and maintain pumps, motors, pump stations, and grinder system equipment; and monitor and control system operations using the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Perform specialized work such as sanitizing and sampling water lines after repairs, collecting system samples, and investigating customer complaints to determine appropriate resolutions in accordance with applicable rules.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience in construction, plumbing, utility, pipeline, public works, or related maintenance work.
  • Enjoys working outdoors in a physically active, hands-on environment.

  • Takes pride in supporting essential public infrastructure and serving the community.
  • For the Senior level, brings water and wastewater experience and is comfortable providing leadership when needed.

Both Levels

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Maintenance Technician Level

  • One to two years of experience in construction, plumbing, pipeline, utility, or related maintenance work preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, or ability to obtain within two years of hire.

Senior Maintenance Technician Level

  • Three to five years of experience in the water and wastewater industry, preferably in a municipal or utility district environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • State of Tennessee-issued Class II water distribution or sewer collections license required. An approved out-of-state license may be accepted through reciprocity by the State of Tennessee.
  • Cross Connections Control certification required.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within one year of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, equipment and tools which includes a heavy motor vehicle, metal detector, chain saw, hand tools, mechanic tools, lawn tools, janitorial tools, telephone, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.

DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.

LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures related to the job of Maintenance Worker I. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.

INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic to complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of Maintenance Technician.

VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with equipment.

MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

COLOR DISCRIMINATION: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency related to the job of Maintenance Technician.

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
