This job is responsible for defining and leading the engineering approach for complex features to deliver significant business outcomes. Key responsibilities of the job include delivering complex features and technology, enabling development efficiencies, providing technical thought leadership based on conducting multiple software implementations, and applying both depth and breadth in a number of technical competencies. Additionally, this job is accountable for end-to-end solution design and delivery.


In Global Payments, the Senior Engineer serves as a senior technical leader responsible for delivering strategic platform modernization and engineering initiatives that enable critical payment processing capabilities across the enterprise. This role leads the design, architecture, and implementation of scalable, resilient, and secure payment orchestration solutions supporting regulatory, client, and business growth objectives. The individual partners closely with product managers, architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to define and deliver technology solutions that align with the Global Payments strategy and roadmap.


This role provides technical thought leadership for cloud-native application development, platform engineering, and enterprise architecture, leveraging modern technologies including Java, Spring Boot, OpenShift, Kubernetes, and DevOps automation practices. The Senior Engineer is responsible for evaluating emerging technologies, establishing engineering standards, driving best practices, and enabling teams to deliver high-quality solutions through CI/CD, automation, observability, and Infrastructure-as-Code capabilities.


As a recognized technical expert, this individual leads complex engineering efforts across multiple teams, guides solution design decisions, and ensures applications meet security, resiliency, performance, and operational excellence requirements. The role partners with technology and business leaders to solve complex challenges, manage technical risk, and deliver innovative solutions that improve platform reliability, scalability, and time-to-market.


The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in distributed systems, microservices architecture, cloud platforms, container technologies, and software engineering best practices, along with a strong understanding of payment systems and enterprise-scale technology delivery. This role also plays a key part in mentoring engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and advancing engineering excellence across the organization.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead the architecture, design, and engineering of enterprise-scale payment orchestration capabilities, ensuring alignment with platform strategy, regulatory requirements, and business objectives
  • Design and develop scalable, resilient, and secure microservices to support high-volume payment processing workloads
  • Define and implement cloud-native engineering solutions leveraging OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, and multi-tenant platform capabilities to improve deployment velocity and operational efficiency
  • Establish and drive engineering standards, architecture patterns, and best practices to ensure maintainability, scalability, and consistency of solutions
  • Lead proof-of-concepts, technology evaluations, and architecture reviews to identify innovative solutions and continuous improvements for application modernization initiatives
  • Partner with architecture, product, delivery, and engineering teams to define technical requirements, solution roadmaps, and implementation strategies that support critical business outcomes
  • Implement and maintain platform observability, monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting capabilities using tools such as Dynatrace, Grafana and OpenTelemetry to improve reliability and production support
  • Design and enforce security controls, policy-as-code frameworks, and governance standards to ensure compliance with enterprise security and risk management requirements
  • Ensures that the design and engineering approach for complex features are consistent with the larger portfolio solution
  • Define the technology tool stack for the solution and evaluate and adapt new testing tool/framework/practices for team(s)
  • Enables team(s)/applications with Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) capabilities and engages with other technical stakeholders pertaining to efficient functioning of CI-CD pipeline
  • Guides and influences team(s) on design and best practices for high code performance –e.g. pairing, code reviews
  • Provides end-to-end delivery of complex features, including automation, for either a single team or multiple teams, at the program level
  • Conducts research, design prototyping and other exploration activities such as evaluating new toolsets and components for release management, CI/CD, and features
  • Works with stakeholders to establish high-level solution needs and with architects for technical requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Architecture & Engineering: Payments orchestration, microservices, middleware, scalable platform design, and architecture governance
  • Application Development: Advanced Java and Spring Boot, with Python, Go, Bash, Mule, Oracle, MongoDB, and CockroachDB experience
  • Cloud & Containers: AWS, Azure, or GCP; OpenShift, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, cluster lifecycle management, and multi-tenancy
  • DevOps & Automation: CI/CD, GitOps, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, Flux, and infrastructure as code using Terraform
  • Reliability & Security: Monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting, security guardrails, policy as code, and tools such as Grafana and OpenTelemetry
  • Infrastructure Fundamentals: Linux, TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, service mesh, and role-based access control
  • Delivery Leadership: Managing multiple initiatives, applying Agile and SDLC practices, mitigating risk, and delivering against business outcomes and timelines
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Communicating across business and technology teams, simplifying technical concepts, producing clear documentation, and mentoring engineers
  • Experience: Typically 15+ years of relevant engineering and technology delivery experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in technical field
  • CISA, CISSP / CISM background
  • Reporting, presentation, Communication, Jira / Kanban, Technology and Risk understanding. ITIL process exposure
  • Domain Knowledge: Experience with ISO 20022, ACH, Wire, SWIFT, RTP, Cross-Border Payments, or Payments Hub platforms
  • Familiarity with business resiliency processes and concepts, risk management principles, technology change management, and/or audit response and preparation methods
  • Familiar with Patch deployment / management process, CI/CD, DevOps
  • Certifications CISA, CISSP, RHEL
