Description

Under the supervision of the Water and Wastewater Superintendent, this employee performs a variety of tasks associated with the installation and maintenance of the City’s water and wastewater system infrastructure. These tasks include setting water meters, installing and repairing water and sewer system service mains and lines, installing irrigation meters, landscaping service areas, installing fire hydrants, maintaining tools and equipment, and assisting other departments when needed. This employee operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators and dump trucks used to install and maintain water and wastewater system infrastructure. The employee is responsible for the safe operation of all assigned equipment and observing all adopted work site safety regulations and procedures.  This employee uses various handheld power tools such as saws and drills in performing work tasks. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background checks and random drug screens.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Water and Wastewater System Installation and Maintenance. Employee performs tasks associated with installing and maintaining City’s wastewater and water systems.
 
  1. Installs and maintains water service mains and lines.
  2. Installs and repairs fire hydrants.
  3. Sets water meters and irrigation meters.
  4. Installs and maintains wastewater service mains and lines.
  5. Utilizes hand power tools to install and maintain wastewater and water system components.  
  6. Maintains tools utilized in wastewater and water system installation and maintenance.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Operates Heavy Equipment. Operates a variety of heavy equipment utilized in the installation and maintenance of wastewater and water system infrastructure.
 
  1. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators and dump trucks utilized in installing and maintaining the City’s wastewater and water systems.
  2. Monitors all equipment for needed repairs or maintenance.
 
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain this license within six (6) months of employment; must be insurable.
  3. Ability to work overtime and non-standard hours when required.
  4. Ability to travel to attend professional development workshops and training programs.
  5. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  7. Verbal skills to effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and customers.
  8. Writing skills to develop professional reports and other materials using correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  9. Math skills to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  10. Ability to operate hand power tools safely and effectively.
  11. Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  12. Ability to use a multiline telephone and two-way radio.
  13. Ability to effectively work with other crew members.
  14. Ability to deal with all contacts in a courteous and patient manner.
  15. Ability to prioritize work projects and multi-task.
  16. Ability to organize files and work projects.
  17. Ability to work with little or no supervision.  
  18. Ability to drive.

Physical Demands
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.
 
Work Environment
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
