DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:  Cascades East Area Health Education Center (CEAHEC) is one of 5 regional Area Health Education Center (AHEC) centers in Oregon; and one of 250+ centers across the United States. CEAHEC is hosted by St. Charles Health System. AHEC works in designated regions through community and academic partnerships to advance the availability of health care and health care education, focusing on rural and medically underserved areas.  CEAHEC’s main focus is on increasing the distribution and diversity of the health care workforce. The current goals of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant- that funds AHECs nationwide- are:

  • Oregon AHEC Scholars Program
  • Community-based experiential training
  • Grades 9-12 pipeline and entry-level health care professions
  • Didactic and experiential training activities for health care professionals
  • Statewide assessment and evaluation of all AHEC programs and activities

Historic CEAHEC activities that fall outside of the current HRSA goals include student scholarships, Sim Manikin (alliance, use), regional emergency preparedness, and K-8 outreach and education.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Education Specialist position at the Cascades East Area Health Education Center (CEAHEC) within St. Charles Health System, is responsible for the design and delivery of all education programs offered by Cascades East Area Health Education Center. The Cascades East Area Health Education Center works with 10-12 high schools within Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson counties.  This position provides provides a variety of occasional programming to the 50+ high schools in the 7 county area served by Cascades East Area Health Education Center. The goal of all educational offerings by Cascades East Area Health Education Center is to increase the diversity of and distribution of health care professionals in rural, frontier and under-served areas.  The position also manages the independent job shadow process for non-high school adults.

This position does not directly manage other caregivers, however may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Coordinates, implements, and delivers health careers education programs and activities as defined by the CEAHEC team and regional needs assessment. Current formal programs include Health Occupations, Diagnosis Days and Camp MedStars.

Develops and nurtures community partnerships for the purpose of supporting and delivering educational and academic programs.

Coordinates scheduling for education programs and activities.

Demonstrates best educational practice skills in teaching and presentation; stays current on use of educational technologies for distance program delivery.

Coordinates evaluation process for programs and records evaluation data.  Works with CEAHEC outside evaluators in providing data collection for larger evaluation purposes.

Follows budget and resource guidelines for educational offerings and programs.

Maintains grant tracking records, assists with grant writing and fund-raising as necessary.

Represents CEAHEC (and SCHS) on regional, academic and health care career collaborations- including the Central Oregon STEM Hub; Better Together; Let’s Talk Diversity Coalition.

Designs new training programs, new community health or outreach programs as needed.

Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects.

Supports Value Improvement Practice (VIP- Lean) principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change.

Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.

Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.  Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the organization’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings.

May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

EDUCATION                  

Required:  Bachelor’s degree in science, education or related field     

Preferred: Master’s in Education, Public Policy, Public Health or similar field.        

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required: Teaching License; Valid Oregon driver’s license and meet SCHS driving requirements.             

Preferred: Teaching License in Oregon

EXPERIENCE

Required:  Minimum 5 years classroom experience in science, health, CTE or related fields           

Preferred: 7-10 years at the middle school, high school or community college level in similar fields. Experience in curriculum design and implementation. Experience as a leader within academic settings.            

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION: 

Experience in writing science and health-related curriculum for a variety of ages and skill levels.

Creative use of materials on a limited budget.

Flexibility in programming- easily adapts to unforeseen circumstances.

Excellent public speaking skills and ability to deliver educational content to diverse audience.

Clear communication within CEAHEC and participating SCHS caregivers.

Willing to travel throughout the region and to all SCHS worksites.

Excellent organizational skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

Frequently (50%): Sitting, standing, walking, lifting 1-10 pounds, keyboard operation.

Occasionally (25%): Bending, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, carrying/pushing or pulling 1-10 pounds, grasping/squeezing.

Rarely (10%):  Stooping/kneeling/crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 11-15 pounds, operation of a motor vehicle.

Never (0%):  Climbing ladder/step-stool, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25-50 pounds, ability to hear whispered speech level.

Exposure to Elemental Factors
