Description

Senior Rail Asset Inspection & Assurance RPEQ Engineer

Rail Infrastructure | 6-Month Contract | Starting September 2026

We are seeking an experienced Senior Rail Asset Inspection & Assurance RPEQ Engineer for an approximately six-month engagement supporting the inspection, assessment and technical assurance of operational rail infrastructure.

This role will suit a senior rail engineer with strong practical experience in track alignment, asset inspection, defect identification and engineering assessment across light rail and/or heavy rail environments.

IBG is a majority Indigenous owned recruitment business registered with Supply Nation, specialising in civil engineering, infrastructure, construction and major project recruitment. We partner closely with contractors, engineering consultancies and delivery organisations to place high quality technical professionals.

Our approach is relationship led and commercially grounded, built on practical industry experience and a clear understanding of how complex projects are delivered.

About the Opportunity

This is a hands-on technical role combining site-based rail asset inspections with desktop engineering review and formal reporting.

You will inspect existing rail infrastructure, identify and assess defects, review available design and maintenance information, and provide practical engineering advice around defect treatment and remediation.

The assignment will involve working around an operational rail environment, so flexibility to undertake inspections during the day, at night and within scheduled possessions will be required.

There is also an opportunity to bring a more innovative approach to asset inspection, including the use of drone or camera-recorded footage and inspection technology or software capable of assisting with the identification and assessment of defects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake detailed inspections and technical assessments of operational rail assets
  • Assess track condition and alignment across light rail and/or heavy rail infrastructure
  • Identify, document and assess defects and areas requiring further investigation
  • Provide engineering advice on appropriate defect treatment, remediation and repair
  • Review existing designs, drawings, maintenance records, inspection history and other asset information
  • Compare observed asset condition against design requirements, maintenance standards and available records
  • Undertake inspections during live rail operations and scheduled possessions where required
  • Support or develop innovative inspection methodologies using recorded footage, drones, cameras and digital inspection tools
  • Analyse inspection findings and supporting information to determine asset condition and engineering risk
  • Prepare clear technical reports, recommendations and supporting documentation
  • Provide the required RPEQ engineering review and sign-off of the final report

About You

You will bring:

  • Degree-qualified engineer with current RPEQ registration, with the ability to sign the final engineering report
  • Demonstrated experience within light rail and/or heavy rail
  • Strong experience relating to rail track alignment and existing rail assets
  • Proven experience undertaking asset inspections, audits and/or testing
  • Practical experience identifying and assessing rail infrastructure defects
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, designs, maintenance records and historical asset information
  • Experience working safely within operational rail environments
  • Flexibility to undertake day, night and possession-based inspections
  • Strong technical reporting and engineering assessment capability
  • Ability to provide practical recommendations for defect repair and remediation
  • An innovative mindset around inspection techniques and asset condition assessment

Experience with drone inspections, camera-based inspections, recorded asset surveys, computer vision, AI-assisted defect identification or similar inspection software would be highly regarded, but is not essential.

What's on Offer

  • Approximately 6 months of contract work
  • Starting September 2026
  • Senior technical role focused on existing operational rail assets
  • Combination of site inspections and desktop engineering assessment
  • Opportunity to influence inspection methodologies and introduce innovative technology
  • Work covering both asset condition assessment and practical defect remediation advice
  • Competitive contract engagement

If you are an RPEQ Engineer with strong rail asset inspection and track experience, we would welcome a confidential discussion.
