Position details
The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Database Engineering & Operations, is responsible for the engineering, administration, automation, reliability, and operational support of enterprise database platforms, with primary accountability for Oracle Database environments and secondary support responsibility for at least one of MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL platforms.
The role ensures database services remain secure, highly available, resilient, performant, and compliant with MUFG technology standards and operational risk requirements. The incumbent will support both engineering and operational activities across the database estate, including platform lifecycle management, service reliability, automation, operational resilience, and production support.
Working closely with Infrastructure, Application, Cloud, Security, and Service Management teams, the AVP will ensure stable and reliable database services supporting critical business applications across the Bank.
Key Responsibilities
1. Oracle Database Engineering & Operations (Primary)
- Administer, maintain, and support Oracle Database platforms across Development, Test, UAT, Disaster Recovery, and Production environments.
- Execute Oracle database installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, migrations, backup, and recovery activities.
- Support Oracle RAC, Data Guard, ASM, and high availability technologies.
- Manage Oracle database performance, capacity planning, resiliency, and operational health.
- Implement database automation, monitoring, observability, and operational controls.
- Support Oracle lifecycle management initiatives, including upgrades, platform refreshes, and modernization activities.
- Ensure Oracle platforms comply with enterprise security, operational, and regulatory requirements.
2. Secondary Database Administration & Support
- Provide administration and operational support for at least one secondary open-source database platform: MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL.
- Perform installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, backup, recovery, and troubleshooting activities for supported databases.
- Support database performance tuning, health monitoring, and operational maintenance.
- Participate in database migrations, platform standardization, and service improvement initiatives.
- Ensure secondary database platforms remain stable, secure, and compliant with enterprise standards.
3. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) & Service Operations
- Support implementation of SRE practices across database services.
- Improve platform reliability, availability, recovery, and operational resilience.
- Support Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and platform health monitoring.
- Develop automation solutions to reduce operational effort and improve service quality.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions for recurring issues.
- Support disaster recovery exercises and operational resilience testing.
4. Incident, Problem & Change Management
- Provide Level 2 and Level 3 support for critical production database environments.
- Resolve database incidents within agreed service levels.
- Participate in Major Incident Management and service restoration activities.
- Support Change, Release, Problem, and Request Management processes.
- Drive operational improvements to reduce recurring incidents and improve platform stability.
5. Security, Risk & Compliance
- Implement database security controls aligned with MUFG policies and standards.
- Support database hardening, vulnerability remediation, access reviews, and compliance activities.
- Manage database auditing, encryption, authentication, and privileged access controls.
- Support technology audits, regulatory reviews, and risk assessments.
- Prepare audit evidence and support remediation of audit findings and management action plans.
6. Automation & Continuous Improvement
- Develop automation solutions using Shell Scripting, Python, Ansible, or approved enterprise tools.
- Automate monitoring, operational reporting, backup validation, compliance checks, and routine administration activities.
- Drive operational efficiency, standardization, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to observability, automation, and platform engineering initiatives.
7. Collaboration & Technical Leadership
- Collaborate with application, infrastructure, cloud, middleware, and security teams.
- Share technical expertise and mentor junior engineers within the team.
- Support operational governance, service reviews, and technical knowledge management.
- Participate in regional and global initiatives supporting database services and operational resilience.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Oracle certifications are highly desirable.
Experience
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in Database Engineering, Database Administration, or Production Support.
- Strong hands-on Oracle Database administration experience is mandatory.
- Experience supporting Oracle RAC, Data Guard, ASM, RMAN, and Oracle Performance Tuning.
- Working knowledge and operational support experience in at least one of MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL.
- Experience supporting mission-critical production environments.
- Experience with database backup/recovery, capacity management, monitoring, and operational support.
- Familiarity with SRE practices, automation, and operational resilience frameworks.
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and cloud-based database technologies.
- Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Shell, Python) for automation.
- Familiarity with operating systems, particularly Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) (mandatory), and Windows.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex issues related to performance, connectivity, and security.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Experience working within financial services or other regulated industries is advantageous.
