The City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is recruiting for a full-time Fleet Mechanic within the Public Works Street Division. The purpose of this position is to perform skilled work maintaining vehicles and equipment from various departments within the city.

 

Position Summary

The Municipal Fleet Mechanic performs skilled mechanical work involving the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a diverse fleet of municipal vehicles and equipment. The position is responsible for ensuring that City-owned vehicles and equipment are maintained in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner to support essential municipal services. Work includes preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, emergency repairs, and maintaining accurate maintenance records.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service on municipal vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose, repair, and overhaul gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternative fuel engines.
  • Repair and maintain transmissions, differentials, drivetrains, suspension systems, steering components, brakes, hydraulic systems, cooling systems, and exhaust systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic systems, including wiring, lighting, charging systems, ignition systems, engine controls, and computerized diagnostic systems.
  • Perform repairs on heavy trucks, street maintenance equipment, snow removal equipment, construction equipment, transit vehicles, trailers, and light-duty fleet vehicles.
  • Utilize computerized diagnostic equipment and manufacturer software to identify equipment failures.
  • Perform welding, cutting, fabrication, and metal repair as needed.
  • Install and maintain emergency warning equipment, lighting, radios, cameras, GPS systems, and other vehicle accessories.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state safety regulations.
  • Conduct Missouri State Safety Inspections if properly licensed.
  • Respond to emergency vehicle breakdowns and perform field repairs when necessary.
  • Maintain detailed maintenance records, repair histories, work orders, and parts usage using the City's fleet management software.
  • Recommend vehicle replacements and major repairs based on condition, maintenance history, and lifecycle costs.
  • Maintain inventory of parts, tools, lubricants, and shop supplies.
  • Ensure shop equipment is properly maintained and kept in safe operating condition.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Assist in snow removal, emergency operations, natural disaster response, and other Public Works activities as assigned.
  • Participate in training to remain current on vehicle technology, safety procedures, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine repair.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of computerized vehicle diagnostic equipment and repair software.
  • Ability to diagnose complex mechanical failures accurately and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices for municipal fleets.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and repair specifications.
  • Skill in welding, fabrication, and machining techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment including lifts, welders, presses, tire equipment, and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and utilize computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and manage multiple repairs simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, and equipment operators.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Specialized training in mechanics and vehicle maintenance or a closely related field.
  • Three years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicants must possess a personal complete set of heavy equipment and light duty mechanics tools for use in vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Valid MO Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes, tanker, and passenger endorsement required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
  • Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certification required as a condition of employment and continued employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE Master Technician Certification.
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications.
  • EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) Certification.
  • Hydraulic systems repair experience.
  • Welding certification.
  • Experience maintaining municipal or government fleets.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, and crawling.
  • Ability to work underneath vehicles and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring devices.
  • Ability to distinguish colors for wiring and diagnostic work.
  • Ability to work in varied weather conditions and shop environments.

 

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a municipal fleet maintenance facility with occasional field service assignments.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical equipment, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, hydraulic fluids, solvents, and cleaning agents.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, heat, cold, dust, and fumes.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • May be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and participate in emergency response operations including snow removal.
