Description

The role is open for Dyson employees only.

About The Role

Dyson is seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking Technical Designer to play a pivotal role within the Global Retail Design & Experience team. This role sits at the intersection of design, engineering and manufacturing, ensuring that innovative retail concepts are translated into technically robust, commercially viable and scalable solutions.

Working in close partnership with retail designers from the earliest stages of concept creation, the Technical Designer provides technical guidance that helps shape design direction without constraining creativity. The role is critical in enabling rapid exploration of new ideas, materials and approaches while maintaining feasibility and performance.

Beyond concept phases, the role is responsible for the development of new fixtures and physical retail elements. This includes producing detailed technical drawings, specifications and supplier briefs, as well as reviewing supplier outputs to ensure design intent is maintained, solutions are right-sized, and cost and engineering complexity are appropriately controlled.

Working cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Supply Chain and external partners, the Technical Designer helps ensure consistent, high-quality delivery across Dyson’s global retail environments.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design Delivery

  • Act as a key technical contributor across Global Retail Design & Experience

  • Provide technical expertise for retail fixtures, environments and physical touchpoints

  • Apply established best practices, standards and methodologies for technical design delivery

  • Balance creativity and technical feasibility, enabling innovation without compromising execution

Early-Stage Concept Support

  • Partner closely with retail designers during concept development to provide proactive technical insight

  • Guide design direction through material knowledge, structural understanding and manufacturing considerations

  • Enable rapid iteration and exploration by identifying viable technical pathways early

  • Support innovative approaches, new materials and emerging technologies

Detailed Design Development

  • Develop concepts into fully resolved technical designs ready for manufacture

  • Produce high-quality technical drawings, specifications and documentation

  • Ensure all outputs are clear, accurate and aligned with design intent and brand standards

  • Translate creative concepts into scalable and repeatable solutions for global rollout

Supplier Collaboration

  • Communicate technical requirements to external suppliers with clarity and precision

  • Review supplier proposals, drawings and samples to ensure alignment with design intent

  • Challenge over-engineered solutions and identify opportunities to optimise cost and efficiency

  • Support decision-making around quality, cost, lead time and complexity trade-offs

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with suppliers and manufacturing partners

Cross-Functional Integration

  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Supply Chain and RDD teams to ensure feasibility and smooth delivery

  • Align technical design decisions with production capabilities and logistical considerations

  • Support problem-solving across design, engineering and production challenges

  • Ensure designs are robust, compliant and suitable for global deployment

Quality, Cost & Performance

  • Ensure all technical solutions meet Dyson’s standards for quality, durability and performance

  • Maintain cost awareness while preserving design intent

  • Identify risks early and support implementation of practical mitigation strategies

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of technical processes and outputs to support speed and efficiency

Planning, Process & Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers to understand project timelines and manage workload effectively

  • Highlight risks and blockers to delivery

  • Develop a strong understanding of the Dyson delivery model across both RDD and Marketing

About You

Experience

  • Experience in technical design for retail environments, fixtures or physical product displays
  • Proven track record of taking concepts through to manufactured solutions

  • Experience working closely with suppliers, manufacturers and production teams

  • Demonstrated ability to balance design ambition with technical and commercial realities

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across design, engineering and manufacturing

  • Proficient in the use of SolidWorks  for 3D CAD modelling, including sheet metal parts, assembly creation and technical drawing production

Skills & Capabilities

  • Technical knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes and construction methods

  • Strong 3D thinking with the ability to translate ideas into buildable solutions

  • Highly detail-oriented with exceptional standards for technical documentation

  • Confident communicator, able to work effectively with both creative and technical stakeholders

  • Strong problem-solving skills with a pragmatic, solution-led mindset

  • Commercially aware, with the ability to challenge cost and complexity where appropriate

Working Style

  • Collaborative and enabling, working as a partner to designers rather than a gatekeeper

  • Curious and innovation-driven, actively exploring new approaches and technologies

  • Clear and confident when providing technical guidance and recommendations

  • Hands-on and proactive, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability

  • Calm and adaptable in a fast-paced, evolving environment
