Summary

Responsible for designing, evaluating and supervising exercise programs for Cardiac Rehab patients in accordance with evidence-based training principles and within the limits of the patient's medical diagnosis.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time. 

 

• Updates exercise prescription on a weekly basis based on clinical status and responses to exercise

• Assist in monitoring the cardiac rehab sessions and maintain records of pertinent information obtained during the session on each patient

• Assist in monitoring EKG and blood pressure responses in patients during the exercise therapy program

• Maintains a team approach in working with the Medical Director, the referring physician, Dietitians, Exercise Psychologists Nurses and Respiratory Therapist to deliver a safe and effective plan of care

• Assist in the maintenance of the Cardiac Rehab department equipment and exercises proper use of the equipment

• Provide group educational lectures and in-services to staff, members and patients

• Develop a discharge plan as it relates to progression, intensity, duration and frequency of home exercise program

• Instructs new patients in the safe use of exercise and resistance equipment

• Other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

 

EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:

• Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology or equivalent in related health field required

• Obtain ACSM certification within 1 year of hire required

• Certified in BCLS required, ACLS within 90 days of hire required

 

WORK EXPERIENCE:

• 1 year of experience in the field of cardiac rehab preferred

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language

• Strong communication skills

• Strong exercise science knowledge base for primary and secondary disease prevention, with the ability to compute MET level and exercise prescriptions in accordance with ACSM standards

• Manual dexterity in use of equipment and supplies

• Ability to understand stress test results

• Knowledgeable of the psychosocial, physiological, developmental, and spiritual needs of the young adult, middle adult, and older adult to provide appropriate care and intervention either personally or through staff

• Ability to utilize a computer and hospital applications

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Hearing ability

• Ability to speak clearly

• Visual acuity

• Motor coordination and manual dexterity

• Good physical and mental stamina to perform duties and responsibilities

• Some physical exertion involved when participating in exercise sessions and in any situation requiring emergency treatment of a patient
• Work may include light cleaning and preparing facility.
