Job Overview 

This position is responsible for the strategic, operational, clinical, financial, and regulatory leadership of pharmacy services at Tufts Medical Center. This role provides executive oversight for inpatient pharmacy operations, clinical pharmacy services, investigational drug services, ambulatory pharmacy services, and medication-use systems throughout the academic medical center.

This position serves as the senior pharmacy leader for Tufts Medical Center and partners closely with physician, nursing, operational, and system pharmacy leaders to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, high-quality, and financially responsible medication management services. The role is accountable for operational excellence, workforce engagement, quality outcomes, regulatory compliance, and execution of local and system pharmacy strategies.

Working collaboratively with system pharmacy leadership, this position supports the implementation of enterprise initiatives related to formulary management, medication-use optimization, business operations, supply chain, revenue cycle, and 340B program strategies while ensuring successful execution within the academic medical center environment. 

Job Description 

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an accredited institution.

2. Massachusetts's Pharmacist License.

3. Five (5) years of hospital pharmacy leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. PharmD.

2. Completion of a general pharmacy residency and specialty residency.

3. Seven (7) years of hospital pharmacy leadership experience.

4. Master’s degree in health-related filed or business administration.

5. Executive leadership experience spanning clinical, operational, financial, academic, and healthcare administration environments.

6. Experience leading pharmacy operations within a complex academic medical center environment, including support of research, residency training, professional education, and scholarly activity.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 

1. Leads the development and execution of pharmacy strategic, operational, workforce, and quality initiatives for Tufts Medical Center.

2. Aligns departmental goals and priorities with organizational and system pharmacy strategies.

3. Leads medication safety and quality improvement activities, including performance measurement, risk reduction, and initiatives that enhance patient safety and operational excellence.

4. Serves as the senior pharmacy advisor to medical center leadership on pharmacy practice, medication-use systems, patient safety, operational performance, and workforce planning.

5. Identifies opportunities to improve operational efficiency, service delivery, patient outcomes, and overall departmental performance.

6. Provides executive oversight for all pharmacy operations and clinical services at Tufts Medical Center, ensuring safe, effective, evidence-based medication management, advancement of clinical pharmacy practice, operational excellence, workforce effectiveness, innovation, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement across all patient care settings.

7. Partners with physician faculty, nursing leadership, researchers, and academic departments to advance the organization's clinical, research, and educational missions through oversight of investigational drug services, support of pharmacy residency and learner programs, and promotion of scholarly activity and professional development.

8. Accountable for departmental financial performance, including operating and capital budgets, productivity, workforce planning, resource allocation, and execution of enterprise pharmacy initiatives related to supply chain, revenue cycle, formulary management, medication procurement, and 340B program objectives.

9. Provides leadership, coaching, mentoring, and talent development for pharmacy leaders and staff while fostering a culture of accountability, engagement, collaboration, professional growth, and continuous improvement.

10. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, accreditation, professional, and organizational requirements and serves as the accountable pharmacy leader for regulatory surveys, inspections, and accreditation reviews.

11. Represents Tufts Medical Center within system pharmacy governance structures and partners with physician, nursing, administrative, service line, informatics, and pharmacy leaders to advance organizational priorities, digital transformation, clinical program growth, standardization, and medication-related outcomes across Tufts Medicine.

Physical Requirements:  

1. Frequent standing & walking, and lifting of 5-10 lbs. 

2. May required lifting and carrying light loads, including boxes, equipment, and stooping or kneeling. 

3. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate prescription medications and computer keyboard. 

4. Requires ability to see medications, computer screen and reports. 

Skills & Abilities: 

1. Advanced knowledge of pharmacy practice, medication-use systems, therapeutic trends, and emerging innovations in healthcare delivery.

2.  Knowledge of medication-use technology, pharmacy informatics, automation, clinical decision support systems, and digital transformation strategies.

3. Knowledge of healthcare industry trends, reimbursement models, regulatory requirements, and the evolving forces shaping pharmacy practice and care delivery.

4. Strategic planning expertise with the ability to align departmental priorities, resources, and performance objectives with organizational goals.

5. Strong financial acumen, including budget management, productivity improvement, capital planning, expense reduction, and revenue enhancement.

6. Expertise in organizational change management, performance improvement, and implementation of large-scale strategic initiatives.

7. Advanced problem-solving, process improvement, and cross-functional operational leadership skills.

8. Ability to influence and build consensus among executive leaders, physician leaders, governing committees, and multidisciplinary stakeholders in complex healthcare environments.

9. Exceptional communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills across all levels of the organization.

10. Expertise in quality improvement, medication safety, accreditation, regulatory compliance, and patient outcome optimization.

11. Knowledge of business planning, service line development, market assessment, and growth strategy execution.

12. Ability to build high-performing teams through talent development, workforce planning, succession planning, mentorship, and employee engagement.

Job Profile Summary

​This role focuses on providing pharmacy related services in a hospital or retail setting. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Pharmacy Leadership duties: Controls, directs, and participates in the activities of the organization through a hierarchy of managers and supervisors. Responsibilities also include long-term strategic planning, determining the policies of the organization, and allocating its resources and making decisions regarding organization growth and diversification to accomplish entity's vision. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that directs a department or small unit that includes multiple teams led by managers and/or team Leaders.  Responsibilities typically include: ownership of short to mid-term (1-3 years) execution of functional strategy and the operational direction of the Department, problems faced are often complex and require extensive investigation and analysis, and requires ability to influence others to accept practices and approaches, and ability to communicate and influence executive leadership.
