Child Development Center Teacher's Assistant

Basic Job Description: Provide direction for the children in the classroom and assist with the implementation of program curriculum. Provide quality experiences that focus on building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. This part-time position and starts at $11.50/hr.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Child Development Center Director at ASYMCA-El Paso, the Assistant Teacher will have the following responsibilities, including, but not limited to:

1. Assisting teachers in developing and preparing plans outlining learning experiences and activities for a group of children.
2. Implementing the program to meet the needs, special interests and capabilities of children and in accordance with the teacher’s lesson plan.
3. Ensuring children's safety and knowing how to carry out emergency procedures when needed.
4. Attending parent-child events as necessary.
5. Providing a neat, clean environment for all children, including snack/kitchen area, and monitoring children’s activities to ensure that children clean up after themselves.
6. Attending staff meetings and in-service training to meet the Continuing Education requirements established by the licensing office.
7. Communicating with parents through the lead teacher and as required by the CDC Director.
8. Assisting with children during transitional times and changes in the daily schedule.
9. Working cooperatively with all staff, communicating directly and avoiding gossip between employees.
10. Interacting with the children at all times, especially during snack time, group activity time and outdoor time.
11. Maintaining a clean, sanitary, and attractive room, including shelves, closets and drawers.
12. Observing behavior of children and discussing unusual behaviors with the teacher or CDC Director.
13. Demonstrating flexibility to move from one group of children to another when requested.
14. Participating in special events, field trips and special programs.
15. Becoming familiar with state regulations and inspections procedures, as well as policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
16. Supporting the program goals of the ASYMCA.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience:

1. Minimum of High School Diploma or GED.
2. AA in ECE, ECD, Education & Teaching or CDA preferred.
3. At least 18 years of age.
4. Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
5. Previous experience planning, organizing, and implementing age- and developmentally-appropriate activities.
6. Previous experience working with diverse groups and building genuine relationships across backgrounds.
7. Any combination of educational and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration of this position.
8. Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Agency’s insurance carrier standards.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

1. Position is physically demanding and requires constant bending, stooping, and lifting (15lbs), as well as walking and standing; must be willing to assist in moving household items and furniture.

Tools and Equipment Used: Standard office equipment and machines such as telephone, classroom tablet, and multi-function copy machine.

Licenses/Certifications: A motor vehicle background check is required to drive the bus if required.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

1. Work in a classroom setting -- sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel and use hands, arms and legs for dexterity, balance. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
2. Lift, carry and balance objects weighing up to 30 pounds, pull and push such objects as file drawers and supplies.
3. Prioritize and multi-task work and projects requiring good memory, concentration and analytical thinking.
4. Perform safe operations of office equipment and machines, as well as recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace.
5. Hear, see (including peripheral vision and distinction of colors), read and communicate verbally and in writing frequently with a wide range of people from divergent socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and origins.
6. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
