Claims Manager

Job Description:

 

The Claims Manager oversees day-to-day claims handling across property, casualty, and builders risk lines, managing a team of Claims Associates and ensuring claims are resolved efficiently, accurately, and in line with company standards. This role reports to the Claims Director and serves as the primary point of escalation for complex claims within the team.

The Claims Manager is responsible for team performance, claim file quality, and adherence to reserving and settlement authority guidelines. The role partners with the Claims Director on claims strategy execution, and works directly with carriers, third-party administrators, and defense counsel on assigned files.

Scope

·       Manage a team of Claims Associates handling property, casualty, and builders risk claims

·       Oversee claim file quality, reserve accuracy, and settlement decisions within delegated authority

·       Serve as the escalation point for complex or high-exposure claims within the team

·       Support the Claims Director on claims strategy execution and reporting

RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Leadership & Claims Oversight

·       Lead, coach, and develop a team of Claims Associates, including workload assignment, performance management, and skill development.

·       Review and approve claim files within delegated reserve and settlement authority; escalate matters that exceed authority to the Claims Director.

·       Establish and monitor team productivity, quality, and cycle-time standards, and hold associates accountable to them.

·       Conduct regular file reviews and audits to confirm claims are handled consistently with company standards and applicable regulations.

Claims Handling

·       Manage a caseload of complex or high-exposure claims directly, from investigation through resolution.

·       Set and adjust reserves to reflect accurate loss exposure, and monitor reserve adequacy across the team's portfolio.

·       Coordinate with carriers, third-party administrators, and brokers to support claim investigation, evaluation, and settlement.

·       Track and report on claims expenses, including TPA fees and legal spend, and flag cost concerns to the Claims Director.

·       Coordinate with defense counsel on litigated claims, including strategy discussions, budget tracking, and status reporting.

·       Support the Claims Director on complex, catastrophic, or reputationally-sensitive matters as needed.

·       Ensure timely escalation of claims involving coverage questions, litigation risk, or regulatory exposure.

Reporting & Process Improvement

·       Prepare regular claims performance reports for the Claims Director, including trends, outstanding exposures, and team metrics.

·       Identify opportunities to improve claims handling processes, tools, and workflows, and implement approved changes with the team.

·       Partner with the Claims Director on training initiatives to build team capability and consistency.

QUALIFICATIONS

·       Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.

·       7+ years of multi-line commercial claims experience, including at least 2 years managing or mentoring claims professionals, with strong coaching and performance management skills.

·       Strong knowledge of claims handling practices, reserving, and coverage evaluation across property, casualty, and builders risk lines.

·       Experience in the construction (AEC) industry or commercial real estate preferred.

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze data and summarize findings clearly.

·       Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

·       Professional designations (AIC, ARM, CPCU) and/or claims adjuster license preferred.

In accordance with Virginia Senate Bill 215 (SB 215), the base salary range for this position is:

$95,000.00 - $140,000.00

Compensation in other cities and states may vary. The determination of salary is based on the candidate’s individual professional experience, qualifications, education, skills, and training.
