Description
Scott's Fencing Co., Inc. | Albuquerque, NM
Scott's Fencing Co. builds gates, iron panels, and steel structures for residential, commercial, and government clients throughout the Albuquerque area. Nearly every product we build needs to be properly prepped and painted before it leaves our shop. We are looking for a Painter who takes ownership of the quality that goes out our door and doesn't need to be told twice to do it right.
What This Job Is
This position is responsible for surface preparation, degreasing, and painting of all steel products before they ship or install. You will report to the Production team. You will work alongside our yard team and shop team when there's no painting to do, but neither of those teams has authority over your work or your priorities. We're looking for someone who can run their own day, make their own calls on surface prep, and speak up when steel isn't ready to be painted.
Responsibilities
- Prepare steel surfaces for painting: clean, grind, sand, and degrease as needed to remove rust, mill scale, and contaminants
- Identify and flag material that isn't adequately prepped before it moves to the booth, and raise it with a supervisor rather than painting over it without saying anything
- Operate a spray pot and electrostatic spray system (our primary method) to apply primer and finish coats
- Maintain the paint booth, spray equipment, and related tools in good working condition
- Use a grinder, bandsaw, drill, drill press, and forklift as part of daily prep work
- Inspect finished work against quality standards before it leaves the booth
- Communicate proactively about material readiness, equipment issues, or scheduling conflicts
- When there is no painting to do, assist the yard or shop teams with fabrication and general labor
- Follow all safety protocols in the paint booth and shop
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience painting steel or similar surfaces, ideally in a fabrication or industrial setting
- Comfortable and competent with a spray pot and electrostatic spray system
- Working knowledge of a grinder, bandsaw, drill, drill press, and forklift
- Welding experience is a plus but not required
- Able to read basic measurements and troubleshoot minor equipment issues
- Able to lift 50 lbs overhead repeatedly throughout the day; this is physically demanding, labor-intensive work
- Reliable transportation and consistent attendance; this role does not work if the person isn't at work
- Comfortable working independently and making judgment calls without someone standing over them
- Willing to speak up, including telling a supervisor 'this isn't ready to paint yet'
- Must pass a background check and drug screening
What We're Looking For
We've struggled to keep this position filled with the right person, and we're being direct about why: we need someone who is self-motivated, honest, and more interested in doing the job right than in being popular on the shop floor. If you take pride in seeing a clean, properly finished product go out the door and you don't need to be managed to get there, this is the job for us.
Compensation & Benefits
- $18-$23 per hour, based on experience
- Stable, year-round employment
- Health insurance
- Paid Time Off
- Paid holidays
