Description
The Courier picks up, delivers, and routes library materials, equipment, and correspondence to and from Osceola Library System branches and other locations as assigned. The Courier will also perform a variety of customer service and paraprofessional duties with library circulation, such as shelving books, answering patron questions, helping patrons on computers, etc. The Courier will have a professional appearance, friendly manner, and an ability to communicate clearly with staff at all levels and provide excellent customer service to library patrons. The Courier must be dependable and complete their route in a timely manner.

Responsibilities
The Courier must perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. Duties may include:
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Drive a company-owned vehicle to transport books, interoffice correspondence, programming supplies, and other library materials or equipment to and from Osceola Library System branches and other locations as assigned.
- Assist in the sorting and routing of books and other library materials.
- Load and unload the courier van.
- Report promptly any malfunctions with the company vehicle.
- Schedule and deliver the van for regular maintenance.
- Maintain the exterior and interior of the company-owned vans so they are clean and professional in appearance.
- Fuel company vehicle.
- Operate and troubleshoot the library’s two remote lockers.
- Assist patrons with locating materials, using computers, or explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.)
- Provide information regarding programs, events, conference rooms, etc.
- Accept and process library patron payments.
- Shelve library materials.
- Address or escalate patron conduct or safety issues to appropriate management.
- Understand and practice the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
An individual should possess the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities and have the required education, training, and/or work experience.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- Prior customer service experience or experience working with the public
- Detail-oriented
- Good time-management skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings, and weekends
- Basic knowledge of library systems and databases a plus
- Prior on-the-job driving/courier experience is a plus
- Prior library experience a plus
- Multilingual speaking a plus
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; push a cart weighing up to 50 pounds; bend; stoop; twist and turn; sit, stand, and drive at various intervals and for prolonged periods of time.
