Discovery Emergent Tech Team

The Discovery Emergent Tech team is part of the Recommendation and Personalization Fleet. We build and operate the services that power content discovery experiences across Disney+ and Hulu — from personalized recommendations to emerging features that shape how hundreds of millions of subscribers find and engage with content. Our systems deliver data at scale to clients running on smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, FireTV, Apple TV, Roku, and more.

We own critical Discovery Experience Delivery services and are building the next generation of discovery features including Verts, Discovery Assistant, Artwork Personalization, and Page Assembly. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is passionate about developing high-performance platforms.

Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

Own operational excellence for critical Discovery Experience Delivery services — monitoring, incident response, and reliability improvements using a "Follow the Sun" model.

Participate in on-call rotations to ensure service health and rapid incident resolution.

Contribute to emerging discovery features: Verts, Discovery Assistant, Artwork Personalization, Page Assembly, and experimentation infrastructure.

Execute strategic migrations (GitHub, cloud, database) that modernize our platform and improve scalability.

Leverage AI tooling for development, codebase exploration, and operational support — AI proficiency is a core part of how we work.

Collaborate with product managers, ML engineers, and other engineering teams across Recommendation and Personalization to deliver personalized user experiences.

Mentor engineers within your squad and beyond to raise the technical bar.

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

Minimum and Preferred. Inclusive of Licenses/Certs (include functional experience as well as behavioral attributes and/or leadership capabilities)

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building large-scale, highly available distributed services
• Strong programming skills in Java and/or Python with a solid grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, distributed systems)
• Data proficiency — hands-on experience with technologies like Databricks (DBX), Apache Kafka, and/or Amazon Kinesis
• AI-proficient development practices — comfortable using AI tools to accelerate coding, exploration, and problem-solving
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) including deployment, scaling, and monitoring
• Understanding of message-based, distributed, scalable, and resilient system architectures
• Experience using source control systems and CI/CD pipelines
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams, time zones, and functions
• A sense of ownership — you take accountability for systems you support and incidents you respond to
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with streaming/media domain or content delivery systems
• Full-stack capabilities (backend + frontend/tooling) for enablement and experimentation acceleration
• SpringBoot and related Spring projects
• Non-relational database technologies (DynamoDB, Cassandra, CouchDB, MongoDB, Redis, Memcache)
• Terraform, Docker, and Kubernetes
• Experience building, testing, and tuning distributed systems at scale
• Familiarity with ML systems or recommendation platforms (literacy, not expertise)

Nice to Have

• ML literacy / proximity to recommendation and personalization systems
• Experience with experimentation platforms and A/B testing infrastructure
• Background in content catalog systems, editorial tooling, or media metadata

Required Education

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience.
