Job Description

Administrative Faculty Contract. Non Tenure Track, Benefits Eligible - This position is funded through 6/30/2027. Employment is contingent upon continued funding. The position is being filled through an emergency appointment. Appointment to the role on a permanent basis is contingent upon meeting additional recruitment requirements.


The Laboratory Operations Coordinator provides laboratory support to the Division of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS). The Coordinator assists faculty in the prepping of student labs, creation of various lab kit supply lists; creates lab kits for distribution to students; and maintains lab operations with consistent, quality, and timely support of the division for safe and state of the art laboratory learning environments.


The Coordinator also supports staff and faculty training and participates in regular upkeep, upgrades, and preventative maintenance of highly technical specialized equipment; provides accounting, procurement, and budgeting support for LAS laboratories including providing technical accounting support and budget

tracking for multiple accounts that include state appropriations and grants; and completes procurement, receipt, storage, issuing, shipment, and maintenance of control records for the LAS laboratory property and equipment.


Ability to travel to assigned locations is required for this position.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Lab Operations, Equipment Maintenance & Storage


  • Work with Director and faculty to schedule technology and simulation updates, faculty training, and updates to equipment
  • Oversee maintenance of lab equipment, facilities and simulation equipment/technology to include developing/implementing a preventative maintenance schedule and, as needed, performing institutional level maintenance
  • Troubleshoots equipment and facility issues and prepares equipment for disposal
  • Submits requests for purchase/repair and maintains a supply of replacement parts
  • Manage/coordinate/perform clerical and lab housekeeping duties, including scheduling laundry pickup/delivery and hazardous waste
  • Ensures all lab environments are clean and organized
  • Assists LAS laboratory students with policies and inquiries to understand laboratory standards, requirements and processes
  • Assists lab occupants to understand lab rules & compliance, maintain a clean & secure lab environment
  • Assists faculty & students with use of lab equipment, technology, supplies and simulation equipment
  • Supports faculty to ensure proper supplies and equipment are available for lab experience and labs are appropriately set up each week
  • Supervises lab staff and student workers at each or the WNC campus laboratories; assigning work and ensuring completion
  • Maintains and shares with division a master lab schedule that incorporates student and faculty requests and meets LAS Division needs

Safety and Compliance


  • Oversees maintenance and security of all storage areas to include maintaining a clean, organized supply room; following all safety regulations for storage of hazardous materials, disposal of sharps, fire regulations and lab procedures
  • Maintains accurate labeling and schematics for all rooms, chemicals, and storage areas
  • Collaborates with LAS Director and Environmental Health & Safety, Police Services, and Facilities offices to ensure compliance with all fire and safety protocols and ensure process and procedure compliance for each of the WNC campus laboratories (Carson, Fallon, Douglas sites)
  • Maintains lab equipment manuals, safety manuals and hazardous material binders, update annually and as needed

Budget Monitoring and Accounts Maintenance


  • Manages departmental accounts includes multiple grant and lab/differential fees funds; reconciles all accounts; analyzes spending, trends, and revenues to make projections and forecasts for the fiscal year/ biennium; completes budget revisions, grant projects, and reconciliation of 1 p‐card
  • Autonomously determines appropriate account usage and spending classification according to WNC and NSHE policies and procedures including those related to purchase card requirements
  • Collaborates with the Director in the development of grant proposals and budgets, tracking, expenditures, and reporting


Division Support & Collaboration


  • Interprets and explain policies and procedures to division faculty and staff to ensure accurate completion of tasks to promote a positive and productive culture and work environment
  • Support, maintain, and build relationships through communications and partnerships to include: working closely with several departments of the college including student services, facilities, finance, human resources, and executive offices
  • Acts as a liaison for the LAS Division to promote operations and to foster relationships among vendors, community groups, and the general public
  • Interpret, support, and explain LAS laboratory policies and regulations and provide information in a professional manner to individuals who may not understand, be confrontational, or uncooperative

Other Duties as Assigned


  • Assist with special assignments such as tours, videotaping, etc
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of NRS, NAC, OSHA standards and LAS Student and Faculty Handbooks
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to identify and defuse potential conflicts in a calm and courteous manner
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Skills in exercising judgment when deciding which situations can be handled personally without impacting on the integrity of the college and which should be escalated to a higher authority


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree and one year of related professional experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree (i.e., Associates Degree and two years of related professional experience; OR three years of related professional experience)

Additional Requirements:


  • Occasional travel to satellite locations is required. A valid drivers license is required at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment
  • Requires frequent lifting and moving of boxes, chemicals, and containers. The position requires the ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials and handling of hazardous waste

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience managing equipment inventories
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs
  • Experience applying and interpreting OSHA safety requirements
  • Experience managing capital equipment and/or grant funded purchases
  • Experience working in education, instructional laboratory, or other workforce training setting
  • Experience supervising student workers or technical support staff


Minimum Starting Salary:

This position is at a salary grade A. The minimum of the placement range is $48,403.99. The selected candidate will be placed at or above the minimum based on education and experience. WNC's placement range falls within the NSHE salary schedule: NSHE ADMINISTRATIVE SALARY SCHEDULE
