Description

This position performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks to provide structure defensible space clearing, vegetation management, fire fuels abatement, and related tasks to make the community Safer from Wildfire.
  • Participates in assignments to designated projects, such as structure defensible space clearing, utility right-of-way fuels reduction, community safety fuels reduction, street and roadway right-of-way fuels reduction, and other community-benefit projects.
  • Maintains an adequate level of physical fitness to meet job requirements. Keeps abreast of new tactics, procedures, programs, and technologies related to job assignments.
  • Assists in maintaining crew vehicles, assigned facilities and related grounds, equipment, and supplies during a work shift to ensure that all apparatus, equipment, facilities, and supplies are readily available and maintained in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • Participates in orientation and training in various aspects of fuels abatement, mitigation, and related activities.
  • Performs heavy, routine manual labor using hand and power tools in various vegetation and fuel types, along rights-of-way and on public and private property, in support of defensible space and other vegetation maintenance activities.
  • Loads and unloads materials.
  • Excavates and backfills trenches using appropriate hand tools.
  • Rakes leaves, cleans grounds, cuts weeds, clears brush, and trims trees.
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains basic tools and equipment used on the job.
  • May operate a pickup truck or similar non-Class B vehicle.
  • Works around heavy equipment performing mechanized abatement activities.
  • Performs duties in conjunction with volunteer and/or emergency services personnel.
  • Performs similar functions in support of public works personnel performing street, water, sewer, parks, facilities, and maintenance activities.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers and the community using principles of good customer service.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS


Must be physically able to perform the duties of this position. Work is generally carried out in an outside environment with exposure to various weather conditions that can be wet and/or humid and with occasional exposure to extreme temperatures including heat of 100° or more and sub-freezing cold as well as rain and snow. Working in the field will require operation of a motor vehicle and occasionally traversing uneven terrain; work on various types of terrain and footing which may be slippery; frequently climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand and walk; and frequently push, pull, grasp and carry while walking; frequently lifting up to 100 or more pounds; work with or near hazardous chemicals; and work in confined spaces. Intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone and communicate through written means.
Employees may be required to work on evenings, weekends and holidays and participate in afterhours on-call assignments.
