JOB SUMMARY 

The purpose of this PART TIME position is to assist in the daily operations of the Animal Services facility by providing quality customer service, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and assisting with animal services.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES  

  • Performs a variety of general administrative duties such as answering and transferring telephone calls, and processing animal intakes, dispositions and adoptions.  Provides quality customer service by providing information and assistance to the public and City Staff. 
  • Responsible for the continual maintenance of the Animal Shelter by cleaning and sanitizing kennels, cages and other critical areas in and around the facility. 
  • Provides adoption counseling during meet and greets with available animals
  • Receives and processes fees for various animal related services. 
  • Maintain records by creating spreadsheets, reports and other documents. 
  • Responsible for the continual maintenance of the Animal Shelter by cleaning and sanitizing kennels, cages and other critical areas in and around the facility. 
  • Circulates animals to ensure adequate space is available and to minimize the need for euthanasia. 
  • Completes an animal inventory when necessary
  • Assist with basic animal care. This may include providing adequate exercise, administering micro-chips and vaccinations, feeding and medicating animals, and preparing sterilization lists. Restrains animals and/or otherwise assists with medical procedures when needed.
  • Completes miscellaneous tasks such as receiving deliveries, transporting animals, loading and unloading trucks, picking up donations, and buying supplies for the Animal Shelter. May assist with seasonal decorations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:  

  • Regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information. 
  • General principles of animal behavior; familiarity with the methods of treating most common behavior problems of shelter animals; temperament testing/other behavior assessment techniques.
  • Basic computer skills utilizing the shelter software. 

 

Ability to:   

  • Perform the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures and desired end results.  There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices.  The assignment is usually reviewed upon completion. 
  • Use standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the shelter. 
  • Recognize meaning of common two or three syllable words.  
  • Deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. 
  • Work effectively when surrounded by loud noises. 
  • Push, pull, drag, lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs without assistance.   
  • Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, object and/or a series of numbers, names and addresses. 
  • Work weekends and evenings as needed.  

 

Experience:

  • Customer Service experience preferred
  • One year of animal handling/animal control experience preferred

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.    

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Possession of a valid Class “C” Motor Vehicle License, with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS 

The duties of this position are normally performed both outdoors in a field environment and indoors in a standard Animal Shelter facility. Incumbents assigned to this position can reasonably expect to be exposed to all weather conditions and various hazardous substances such as explosive Fuels, oils and other lubricants, dust, moderately loud noise levels and aggressive domesticated and nuisance wildlife animals on a routine basis. Incumbents in this position can expect to routinely push, pull, lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs daily without assistance. Additionally, incumbents in this position should be physically able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl and reach in the performance of their daily duties. Incumbents in this position must be able to read and write.  Incumbents in this position may be required to work evenings and weekends. 

Due to the requirement for this position to have access to sensitive information, a criminal history background, and fingerprint check will be conducted through the FBI. Candidates must not have a felony or major misdemeanor conviction.
