Course Description:

The frozen ground. Permafrost occupies about half of Canada’s landmass and about 24% of Earth’s continents. Climate warming is particularly affecting permafrost areas, including the vast amount of carbon it stores. The course investigates how climate and landcover affect permafrost, the role of ground ice in the (in)stability of landscapes, the hydrology of permafrost environments, as well as the impacts of perennially frozen ground on infrastructures and communities. Students will also learn skills related to monitoring techniques and data sources. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand key concepts of permafrost systems, and many of the major issues affecting permafrost environments.

PhD in geography, environmental studies, or related discipline, with demonstrated work in permafrost environments. An acceptable level of education/experience could be viewed as being equivalent to the educational requirement and/or demonstrated experience
