The Ketchikan Gateway Borough is seeking a skilled Maintenance Tech II for our Public Works Department. This position's primary duties are to maintain former school facilities, keeping these buildings and their related systems safe and functional. The ideal candidate brings a strong mechanical or building trades background with an emphasis on carpentry, along with the ability to perform grounds maintenance, roofing and building repairs, interior alterations, and general upkeep. Desired experience with HVAC, boiler, and water/wastewater treatment systems is preferred.

Responsible for the maintenance and operation of Borough owned equipment, related systems and facilities.
  • Perform assignments and independent maintenance operations requiring specialized skills and required experience with the main emphasis on carpentry.
  • Assist in or perform grounds maintenance, roofing repair and exterior building repair requiring general maintenance or construction skills. 
  • Assist in or perform interior building repairs, alterations or remodeling as directed. Perform furniture, cabinet, and fixture repairs.
  • Assist in or performs building maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Operate light to moderately heavy vehicles and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with co-workers and the public.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods. If necessary, work under undesirable weather conditions.
  • Make cost and time estimates of material and repair parts requirements.
  • Keep accurate records of time and material required to complete assignments.
  • Be available to engage in all jobs as may be necessary.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities which may be assigned by the Director of Public Works or designee.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
  • Perform related other duties as assigned by the Public Works director.
  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, equipment, and materials used in maintenance and repair of building and related systems (i.e. mechanical, electrical, heating and plumbing.)
  • Ability to assess situations and make appropriate judgments.
  • Working knowledge of building plans and specifications.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Strong mechanical or building trades background.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures including safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate computers and related software.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all Borough policies and Code.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others with a strong sense of teamwork.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
Must be able to hear.  Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell.  Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy (70) pounds. 
Frequent exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions; driving vehicles; use of various tools and equipment; and administering CPR and first aid as needed.LICENSES:  
Valid State of Alaska driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the Borough’s insurance carrier.  The following licenses/certificates must be current or obtained within 6 months of employment:
  • State of Alaska Driver’s License with no restrictions
  • CPR or BLS card
  • First Aid Certification
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:   
High school diploma or GED.   Five (5) years’ experience as a carpenter or maintenance technician including two years apprenticeship as a carpenter.
Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
