As a well-established, growth-oriented commercial HVAC and plumbing contractor we are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead our HVAC and plumbing design efforts. This role combines technical expertise, leadership, and strong communication to ensure high-quality designs, smooth project execution, and continuous improvement across the Projects team. The ideal candidate is organized, code-savvy, and capable of developing people, standards, and processes.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead the mechanical design and drafting function, setting clear expectations for quality, standards, and delivery
- Train and mentor team members on HVAC and plumbing design principles and best practices
- Partner with the Projects and Service teams to improve mechanical knowledge, execution, and consistency
Engineering & Design Delivery
- Oversee HVAC and plumbing design from concept through construction support
- Collaborate with owners, architects, and design partners to define requirements and develop system concepts
- Perform and oversee thermal load calculations and energy analysis
- Review awarded projects for value engineering and cost-savings opportunities
- Support equipment selection and review shop drawings and submittals as required
Quality, Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain current knowledge of mechanical and plumbing code requirements and communicate updates internally
- Establish and enforce drawing standards and quality-control review processes
- Stay current on tools, technologies, and industry standards through ongoing professional development
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience
- Strong communication and relationship skills with a collaborative leadership style
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
