Job Description

Coordinates operation of assigned components of Cardiac Device program, including planning, implementing, monitoring, and improving quality of services, overseeing day-to-day operations, and maintaining fiscal accountability. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Experience

  • 5 years of clinical nursing experience
  • 4 years of experience in specialty nursing in Cardiac, Transplant, and/or VAD

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare, Business, or related field
  • Preceptor experience strongly preferred
  • One year of leadership and/or people management experience strongly preferred

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Certification Summary

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the single State of Georgia or Multi-State through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire
  • Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) or Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) within 1 year of hire

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Leadership abilities
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skills Assessment within 30 days of employment.

Job Responsibilities

Practice (Caring for the Patient)

  • Oversees daily Cardiac device program operations.
  • Manages cardiac implantable device emergency management and bedside clinical care under the direction of the cardiologist.
  • Serves as technical expert for Cardiac Device supplies, procedures, and policies.
  • Coordinates and schedules patient procedures.
  • Maintains contact device vendors, research partners, and registry organizations.
  • Integrates values and language preferences into healthcare delivery through a culturally sensitive process.
  • Coordinates preprocedural referrals, testing, insurance verification, communication with referring Cardiologist, transportation and lodging needs, and coordination of same-day procedures. 
  • Utilizes clinical decision support tools and resources to recognize issues, prioritize care, and modify plan of care as needed.
  • Utilizes appropriate documentation tools to record, measure, and retrieve healthcare data.
  • Provides patient and family education appropriate for identified learning needs.
  • Coordinating care across multiple service lines for patients being discharged home with an implanted device, including case management, discharge planning, durable medical equipment companies, local EMS providers, and home health agencies.
  • Utilizes resources to plan and provide nursing care that is safe, effective, and financially responsible.

  • Participates in planning, creating, and implementing cardiac device programs.
  • Oversees Heart Center and system level education as an instructor on cardiac device related care and technology. Communicates effectively any changes in technology or instructions for use.
  • Fosters professional development of others via constructive performance feedback, input, and coaching.
  • Promotes growth and development of leadership skills, accountability, clinical decision making, and problem-solving within self and others.
  • Pursues educational opportunities to enhance professional growth and clinical expertise for self and others.

Engagement (Engaging and Leading Professionally)

  • Consults, contributes to, and coordinates care with interdisciplinary healthcare team members.
  • Ensures quality customer service and effective communication with all customers and coworkers.
  • Works with Heart Center leadership and Financial Operations Manager to develop and achieve departmental budget, goals, and charge reconciliation practices.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in supporting budget, productivity, and resource utilization.
  • Engages in ethical practices utilizing principles from the Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Maintains therapeutic and professional relationships with appropriate role boundaries.
  • Contributes to a supportive and healthy work environment.

Outcomes (Driving Excellent Results)

  • Oversees equipment maintenance, supply inventory, and operational management. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, device functionality, manufacturer safety alerts, research protocol needs, and awareness of viable alternative options in the market including features and compatibility with specific patient needs.
  • Monitors FDA, CMS, TJC, and manufacturer alerts and notices related to cardiac devices currently in use at Children’s and takes appropriate action, if any, to resolve.
  • Coordinates utilization of staff for effective and efficient services.
  • Participates in cardiac device quality and identifies clinical process improvement opportunities.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and reports data for cardiac device performance measures to Heart Center quality team.
  • Maintains and actively participates in device-associated network databases and committees.
  • Reviews any adverse events associated with cardiac devices and partners with heart center quality for continuous assessment and improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and organizational guidelines and other regulatory agencies, including CMS, TJC, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Provide continual regulatory readiness for program and system surveys and audits.
  • Actively promotes a lean work environment while encouraging adherence to lean principles and processes.
  • Provides consultation as required at daily huddles.
  • Integrates evidence and research findings into clinical judgement and nursing practice.

Professional Mandatory Requirements

  • Completes orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.
  • Completes mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements as defined by unit and system by due date.
  • 75% attendance at staff meetings, if applicable.
