The Civil Service Commission of the Village of Tinley Park is accepting applications from October 7, 2026 to November 6, 2026 for entry level employment for the position of Patrol Officer A-2 with the Village of Tinley Park Police Department.
The Civil Service Commission is seeking qualified candidates committed to a career in law enforcement to fill multiple entry-level vacancies within the Tinley Park Police Department. As a Patrol Officer, you will be responsible for the protection of life & property and the prevention of crimes. You will patrol assigned areas, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, regulate traffic and respond to traffic incidents, investigate crimes/incidents/suspicious activity, conduct interviews to gather evidence and prepare accurate reports, make arrests and take appropriate enforcement action, and enforce village ordinances and all applicable federal, state, county and municipal laws. You will preserve public order, de-escalate tense or potentially dangerous situations using sound judgment, apprehend and process offenders, conduct investigations, gather evidence, obtain witnesses, testify in court, and serve legal papers. You will also provide assistance during medical emergencies, accidents, disasters, and other critical incidents. This position requires you to develop positive relationships with residents, businesses, schools, and community and to work collaboratively with fellow officers, supervisors, dispatchers, fire, emergency management, and other agencies. You will also have opportunities for specialty functions including but not limited to SSERT, Mobile Field Force, Asset Forfeiture, Advanced Evidence Team, K9, Crisis Intervention Team, Cyber, Major Crimes Task Force, Juvenile Investigations, Field Training Officers, and more.Documentation must be provided for each requirement outlined below, demonstrating each requirement has been met. All applicants must participate in the mandatory orientation requirement once the application and all required documents are approved by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates who do not meet this requirement will not be advanced to the written exam.
All applicants must schedule a written exam through the approved testing provider within ten (10) days of Civil Service Commission notifying the applicant that the application and required documents are approved. Candidates will be given a voucher code to cover the cost associated with the written exam. Written test exam must be scheduled within 4 weeks (28 calendar days) of receiving the voucher code. A passing weighted score of 70% is required on the written test exam. Failure to provide the Civil Service Commission notice of scheduled written exam date may result in the applicant not advancing in the process.

- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and under the age of 35 years of age at time of examination. Applicants with military experience and prior employment experience as Tinley Park Patrol Officer may be entitled to an exception to this requirement. See 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7 and Tinley Park Village Ordinance 2000-O-069.
- At least one of the following educational or experience requirements must be met:
- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree from a four-year college or university. (Official certified transcripts through the college or university registrar, Parchment, or the National Student Clearinghouse are required and should be sent directly to the Civil Service Commission at [email protected].
- Associate Degree or 60 hours of college credit with at least a “C” average (or equivalent) and with an emphasis, in either case, being placed on course work in the law enforcement field.
- An existing part-time Patrol Officer with the Village of Tinley Park pursuant to Section 33.20 of the Village of Tinley Park Code who has been a part-time Patrol Officer with the Village for a minimum of four years, prior to the test date and also has met the minimum training requirements for full-time Police Officers established by the State of Illinois.
- Must present a valid P.O.W.E.R. card dated within six (6) months of the test date at application or at the time of the written exam.
- Possess a valid driver’s license which must be shown as identification during all phases of testing.
