Description

Madrigal is a biopharmaceutical company focused on delivering novel therapeutics for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a serious liver disease that can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure, need for liver transplantation and premature mortality. Every member of our Madrigal team is connected by our shared purpose: leading the fight against MASH.

Madrigal’s medication, Rezdiffra (resmetirom), is a once-daily, oral, liver-directed THR-β agonist designed to target key underlying causes of MASH. Rezdiffra is the first and only medication approved by both the FDA and European Commission for the treatment of MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis (F2 to F3). An ongoing Phase 3 outcomes trial is evaluating Rezdiffra for the treatment of compensated MASH cirrhosis (F4c).

Our success is driven by our people. We are building a dynamic, inclusive, and high-performing culture that values scientific excellence, operational rigor, and collaboration. To support our continued growth, we are strengthening our workforce strategy to ensure we have the right talent, at the right time, in the right way.

The Global Medical Lead, MASH serves as the single point of accountability for Madrigal’s integrated global medical strategy and plan across the MASH portfolio. Partnering closely with Medical Affairs leaders, this individual brings together diverse expertise to align priorities and investments, and drives coordinated execution across evidence generation, scientific engagement, diagnostics, lifecycle planning, and external partnerships, with execution led by the relevant specialist functions. Through collaboration with key cross-functional stakeholders, medical perspectives are incorporated early into enterprise decisions and translated into aligned business and development strategies. Leading a team of Medical Directors supporting MASH, the Global Medical Lead fosters a high-performing leadership team that drives scientific excellence, navigates tradeoffs, and delivers the integrated MASH strategy to maximize patient impact and portfolio value.

Key Responsibilities

1.  Integrated MASH Medical Strategy & Portfolio Leadership

  • Own the integrated global MASH medical plan and strategy across resmetirom and future MASH assets, ensuring it is scientifically rigorous, strategically aligned, and operationally deliverable across all priority markets, functions, and stages of the product lifecycle.
  • Partner closely with Medical Affairs leaders to align priorities across evidence, stakeholder engagement, lifecycle planning, and intended outcomes, ensuring all Medical functions work from one coordinated corporate asset plan. Translate the MASH medical strategy into clear, actionable medical objectives with measurable outcomes and priorities that guide functional strategies and execution across the organization.
  • Incorporate perspectives from a wide variety of markets to ensure the strategy continually reflects differences in healthcare systems, patient populations, clinical practice, access environments, and treatment pathways while frequently adjusting priorities and investments in response to changing evidence, stakeholder needs, market dynamics, and portfolio opportunities.
  • Own medical prioritization and tradeoff decisions across the MASH portfolio, balancing investment, resources, and organizational focus across competing opportunities to maximize impact.
  • Champion AI-enabled and innovative approaches that improve the speed, quality, and effectiveness of strategic planning and execution across the MASH portfolio.

2. Integrated Evidence, Engagement, and Communication Priorities

  • Own the integrated evidence strategy for the MASH portfolio, leading the development and prioritization of asset-level evidence priorities and areas of interest (AOIs) and aligning scientific questions, unmet needs, evidence gaps, and stakeholder needs to focus investment on the highest-value opportunities.
  • Partner with leaders for evidence generation and other relevant Medical Affairs activities to translate asset-level evidence priorities into appropriate evidence approaches and coordinated functional plans..
  • Define the MASH portfolio evidence, scientific communication, congress, and engagement priorities to translate those priorities into appropriate publication, dissemination, advisory board, educational, and stakeholder engagement plans that reflect the full profile of the MASH portfolio and Madrigal's leadership in the MASH field.
  • Ensure insights from Medical Affairs, R&D, Commercial, Market Access, Diagnostics, International teams, real-world practice, and external experts are integrated to continuously refine evidence, communication, and engagement priorities to address the highest-priority stakeholder needs and evidence gaps.
  • Define stakeholder-specific engagement and communication priorities across patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, payers, health systems, advocacy organizations, and policymakers.
  • Adopt AI, advanced analytics, and emerging technologies to strengthen the evidence-gap identification, stakeholder insight generation, prioritization, and measurement of impact on the MASH disease area.

3.  Enterprise Leadership, External Influence, and Cross Functional Integration

  • Serve as the primary member for Medical Affairs representation on the Global Brand Team and responsible for Medical Affairs representation of program teams, Medical Leadership team, and lifecycle planning forums providing the medical perspective on key brand strategy decisions and ensuring appropriate alignment and coordination from the outset.
  • Lead the end-to-end Medical strategy and cross-functional Medical Team for Resmetirom, acting as the primary Medical integrator across Medical Affairs, Commercial, R&D, Market Access, Diagnostics, International Medical Affairs, and other functions to ensure a seamless, coherent, and strategically consistent asset strategy and plan.
  • Serve as the final escalation point and senior medical authority for complex scientific and medical issues requiring risk assessment, cross-functional resolution, or enterprise-level direction.
  • Synthesize portfolio progress, risks, opportunities, and required tradeoffs for senior leadership, enabling timely informed decisions and maintaining overall accountability for agreed decisions.
  • Serve as the senior medical ambassador for MASH externally engaging with leading healthcare experts, scientific leaders, academic institutions, medical societies, HTA bodies, payers, regulatory agencies, and patient advocacy organizations worldwide.
  • Bring scientific evidence, medical insights, and both internal and external stakeholder perspectives into portfolio and lifecycle decisions while maintaining independent medical judgement.
  • Lead or represent Madrigal at major scientific congresses, policy and clinical forums bringing external and regional insights back into medical strategy, evidence priorities, and enterprise decision-making.
  • Champion the integration of the patient perspective into scientific strategy, working with medical societies and patient advocacy organizations to ensure the disease burden and treatment experience of MASH patients inform all aspects of the program.
  • Be a strong and proactive contributor to commercial planning for the MASH portfolio, ensuring that medical insights and evidence generation strategies directly inform and strengthen commercial execution.

4.  People Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Lead, develop, and retain a diverse and high-caliber team of Medical Directors supporting the MASH portfolio, building the depth of talent and scientific expertise required to sustain long-term portfolio success.
  • Set clear objectives, decision rights, performance expectations, and accountabilities across the Medical Director team, including ownership of assigned scope-level medical plans and scientific leadership of selected Medical-sponsored interventional studies, to empower individual ownership and build the support systems needed for future growth of the MASH portfolio.
  • Create an environment where Medical Directors continuously challenge perspectives, navigate challenging tradeoffs, collaborate effectively across the organization, and remain accountable for measures of MASH portfolio success.
  • Foster a culture built on scientific excellence, enterprise thinking, continuous improvement, and responsible AI-enabled ways of working that extend beyond Medical Affairs into Commercial and R&D.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, career development support, and performance oversight to Medical Directors, fostering individual growth alongside successful delivery against the MASH strategy.
  • Model Madrigal's values and culture in all aspects of leadership; champion inclusion, psychological safety, and a collaborative team environment.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • MD required; advanced clinical training in hepatology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, internal medicine, metabolic disease, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • PhD, MBA, or advanced training in clinical research, outcomes research, health policy, health economics, or business is a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with substantial leadership experience within Medical Affairs at a global or senior regional level – robust US launch experience is required.
  • Demonstrated success leading Medical Affairs strategy for a major asset or disease area across key stages of the product lifecycle, including launch and post-launch optimization, with accountability for both strategy and execution.
  • Proven experience representing Medical Affairs on senior cross-functional asset, brand, development, or lifecycle teams, with the ability to influence enterprise decisions across R&D, Commercial, Market Access, and other functions while maintaining independent medical judgment.
  • Strong experience developing integrated medical and evidence strategies, including prioritization of scientific questions, evidence needs, stakeholder priorities, and investment decisions across the product lifecycle.
  • Deep scientific and clinical understanding of MASH, hepatology, metabolic disease, or a closely related therapeutic area. Direct experience in MASH, NAFLD/NASH, or liver fibrosis is highly desirable.
  • Track record of building, leading, and inspiring large, geographically dispersed, and complex, global, cross-functional teams of scientific and medical professionals.
