Responsibilities
Coordinates the activities of personnel, field crews, and individuals responsible for the maintenance and repair of public utilities and infrastructure, including streets, traffic signs and markings, drainage systems, and other right-of-way maintenance. Performs inspections related to public works complaints and documents, in detail, the scope, labor, and materials needed to complete repairs or maintenance. Serves as a coordinator for stormwater management and performs inspections as required by the City’s Stormwater Management Plan.
Responsibilities
- Leads, oversees, reviews, and performs the work of staff responsible for maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work on city infrastructure.
- Develops and implements crew assignments.
- Investigates work requests received from the public and identifies corrections needed.
- Assists maintenance staff in troubleshooting and performing more complex maintenance and repair activities.
- Assists with coordinating the maintenance of equipment and machinery, including vehicles, power tools, and related equipment.
- Ensures adherence to safe work methods, procedures, and practices.
- Identifies training opportunities and needs.
- Makes recommendations to higher-level staff.
- Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures, and work methods associated with assigned duties.
- Evaluates assigned work projects.
- Acquires necessary resources, as appropriate.
- Coordinates work activities with other Public Works maintenance units and City departments.
- Communicates and responds to more difficult questions and concerns from the general public.
- Provides information, as appropriate, and resolves public service complaints.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Preferred education: Associate degree or technical college training in a related field.
- Five to seven years of related work experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid driver’s license.
Key Skills/Competencies for this position
- Knowledge of practical problem-solving methods and arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, percentages, area, discounts, circumference, and volume.
- Thorough knowledge of equipment, materials, and procedures used in daily DPW operations.
- Skilled in the operation and proper use of applicable tools and equipment.
- Ability to prepare original correspondence, follow technical manuals, read and interpret rules, and communicate applicable requirements to the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with suppliers, vendors, the general public, and customers.
- Ability to coordinate with federal, state, governmental, and regulatory agencies; organize and supervise crews performing construction and maintenance work; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk; drive motor vehicles and heavy equipment; grasp and hold objects; perform repetitive movements; use eye-hand coordination; hear and speak; use the telephone; and interact with the general public and customers. The employee frequently stands, sits, reaches, tastes or smells, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. After-hours work may be required during emergency events, City celebrations, or as necessary for other reasons. The employee occasionally climbs stairs and ladders. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
