We are seeking a Pool Operator to manage the daily upkeep, water chemistry, and mechanical systems for the City’s pools, splash pads, and grounds. In this versatile role, you’ll handle pool chemical testing, equipment repairs, general facility upkeep, and routine groundskeeping. If you are safety-focused, detail-oriented, enjoy active, hands-on work in the community, and take pride in keeping public spaces safe, this position may be for you! 

This class may be called upon to work nights, weekends, and holidays, respond to emergencies, flex work schedule, and work overtime as required by the Department. While employees in this classification may generally work year-round, the peak season for aquatics is typically held during the months of May through September, and employees are expected to be available during this time to respond to call-backs and adjust schedule to ensure appropriate operation and attention to aquatics programs and facilities.  


About You: 

As a Pool Operator, you will perform a variety of semi-skilled and technical maintenance and repair work on aquatic facilities, including pools, splash pads, and other amenities and related mechanical equipment, including electrical, filtration, and plumbing systems.  Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining chemical balances and the related chemical testing and chemical control systems. You will work under the close supervision of the Parks Superintendent and/or the Assistant Superintendent.  


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. 
  • One – three (1-3) years of experience in the care, maintenance and operations of large commercial or public swimming pools, preferably such experience was with a municipality, swim club, fitness center, hotel/resort, etc. 
  • Any combination of education, experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.  


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Arizona state driver’s license or ability to obtain one.   Must have completed training requirements as required by State and Federal governments, including those required by the OSHA Hazard Communications Standard.  Obtain certification as a Certified Pool Operator through National Swimming Pool Foundation or Aquatic Facility Operator through the National Parks and Recreation Association within twelve (12) months of placement to position.  


KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of swimming pool mechanical systems, including but not limited to, filtering, chemical control systems, pumping, cleaning, electrical, and plumbing systems;  Motors, pumps, filters, chemical feeders, chlorinators, and related mechanical pool equipment; Pool water chemistry and the characteristics of chemicals used to maintain safe conditions; Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in handling hazardous chemicals; Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations related to chemical use and disposal; Equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; First aid and applicable safety precautions; Basic knowledge of general maintenance and custodial practices and of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; Federal and State OSHA regulations and City policies and practices regarding safe work practices; Hazardous and biological materials identification and proper disposal methods; Occupational hazards, related Federal and State OSHA regulations and standard safety precautions; Pool hazards and appropriate safety precautions; Proper use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines.


SKILLS 

Skill in the effective, safe operation of listed tools and equipment; Diagnose and repair problems and perform routine maintenance and repair activities; Following and maintaining safety standards, and identifying safety problems; Preparing inspection, maintenance and repair records and files; Promoting and enforcing safe work practices; Performing mathematic calculations with ease and accuracy for determining proper chemical application rates; Applying sufficient computer skills required to retrieve SDS, rules and regulations, and update records; Manual dexterity and vision sufficient to calculate, mix and utilize appropriate chemicals and equipment; Diagnose and repair problems and perform routine maintenance and repair activities; Following and maintaining safety standards, and identifying safety problems; Preparing inspection, maintenance and application records and files; Promoting and enforcing safe work practices; Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; Read and interpret schematics, blueprints and diagrams.


ABILITIES

Ability to apply and dispose of chemicals in a safe and effective manner; Read, interpret and apply Safety Data Sheets (SDS), chemical labels, and laws/regulations governing aquatic and pool chemical; Work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions; Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to communicate effectively orally and in writing; Establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.   Prepare and maintain records; Perform custodial activities and manual labor; Use equipment and tools properly and safely; Adapt to changing priorities; Read and follow label instructions; Participate in teamwork productively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public; Maintain regular attendance and recognize attendance as an essential function of this job to ensure continuity; Willingness to work shifts and hours for department to meet operational and service needs to include the working of on-call, call-out, and early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as scheduled and as necessary; and work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements.

 

Water Quality, Chemical Handling & Compliance (35%) - Maintains proper pool chemistry, including calibrating and adjusting chemical dispensers and controllers, calculating proper flow rates; collecting water samples and testing water; dispensing chlorine, caustic soda, and muriatic acid to adjust water chemistry; and responding to chemical spills at pools. Maintains chemical storage in compliance with County, State, and Federal regulations, and is responsible for the safety and storage of chemicals within work areas.  Maintains inventory of chemicals; Organizes and maintains chemical room/area; Issues chemicals to aquatics personnel for usage.


Pool & Facilities Mechanical Maintenance (30%) Performs maintenance and repair work on swimming pool decks, pool walls and floor areas, including setting forms, pouring and finishing concrete, setting and replacing ceramic tile grout, and painting and plastering pools; performs acid wash as needed; Cleans and backwashes pool water. Performs a variety of aquatics and general maintenance/repair work related to the care and maintenance of the City’s pools, splash pads and park grounds/facilities and related mechanical and chemical systems, including electrical and plumbing systems.  


General Grounds, Janitorial & Operational Support (20%) Performs and maintains the bottom, sides, and surface of the pools by using a motorized pool vacuum, manual brush, and other power equipment as needed. Performs facility maintenance work including general carpentry, painting, drywall, electrical, and plumbing tasks related to installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings including restrooms, shower and dressing rooms, offices, and concession areas. Performs the functions and duties of a “Groundskeeper” as required and assigned; Performs related maintenance and landscaping duties as required. Performs routine maintenance and janitorial work on recreation facilities and grounds as required (i.e., tennis, racquetball and basketball courts). 


Safety & Professional Conduct (15%) Maintains and keeps current all SDS and label sheets in vehicles and storage areas to ensure easy access/retrieval.  Makes recommendations to supervisory staff of repairs required beyond capabilities.  Provides excellent and proficient customer service to both internal and external customers. Communicates and acts professionally with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
