Job Profile Summary:
Provides technical lab support by performing complex lab and research related tasks to ensure accurate research results that can expand on the knowledge of the field of study. Responsible for following lab safety standards.

Job Description:

The School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering (ECEE) and the School for Integrated Engineering (SIE), part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, are seeking a Lead for Infrastructure and Laboratory Operations to provide strategic and operational leadership across research, instructional, and operational environments that support the missions of both Schools. 

 

This position operates across the Tempe and West campuses and supports operations across multiple buildings, campuses, and complex research, instructional, office, support, and shared-use environments. The role serves as the School-level lead for infrastructure, facilities coordination, safety program implementation, operational readiness, and space management activities across both Schools. 

 

The position supports research continuity, instructional operations, and School operations by helping ensure facilities, laboratories, offices, support spaces, and shared-use environments remain safe, compliant, functional, and operationally effective. The role provides visibility into infrastructure conditions, safety performance, operational issues, space utilization, and emerging risks through reporting, coordination, process management, and continuous improvement efforts. 

 

This position reports directly to the ECEE School Director and works closely with SEI leadership while receiving functional guidance from FSE Facilities, Space Planning, and Safety leadership to support alignment with college-wide operational standards, infrastructure planning efforts, space planning initiatives, and laboratory safety practices. 

 

The position does not perform hands-on maintenance, trade work, or technical repair activities, but is responsible for leading coordination efforts to ensure operational, safety, compliance, infrastructure, and space-related issues are appropriately prioritized, communicated, tracked, escalated, and resolved across multiple stakeholder groups. 

 

This role operates with a high degree of independence and is expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing operational needs, coordinating responses, escalating risks, and supporting long-term infrastructure, safety, and space planning efforts across multiple campuses and organizational units. 

Position Salary Range:

  • $66,200- $82,800 DOE

Essential Duties:

  • 1. Research, Instructional, and Operational Coordination 

    • Lead operational coordination for research, instructional, office, support, and shared-use environments across ECEE (Tempe) and SIE (West).  

    • Implement standardized operational practices to support safe, efficient, and consistent operations.  

    • Ensure facilities and operational environments are organized, functional, and ready to support School activities.  

    • Partner with faculty, laboratory staff, and research teams to support operational readiness, infrastructure coordination, and continuity of operations.  

    • Support onboarding, access management, operational training coordination, and user readiness activities.  

    • Identify operational gaps, recurring issues, inefficiencies, and opportunities for continuous improvement.  

     

    2. Safety Program Leadership and Compliance Oversight 

    • Serve as the School-level coordinator responsible for implementation of the Fulton Schools of Engineering Safety Plan and associated School safety initiatives.  

    • Provide operational oversight and coordination to support compliance with ASU, FSE, and School safety requirements, including training, SOPs, signage, inspections, hazard communication, and documentation.  

    • Monitor School-wide safety performance, compliance metrics, audit readiness, corrective actions, and risk mitigation efforts, and provide recommendations to School leadership and FSE Safety.  

    • Coordinate and chair quarterly safety coordination meetings with laboratory managers and operational stakeholders to review compliance status, audit findings, open issues, and continuous improvement opportunities.  

    • Coordinate preparation for audits, inspections, and compliance reviews and support timely resolution of findings and corrective actions.  

    • Serve as the primary School-level liaison between faculty, laboratory personnel, FSE Safety, EHS, and operational stakeholders regarding safety compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement.  

     

    3. Facilities, Infrastructure, and Space Management Coordination 

    • Serve as the primary operational point of contact for facilities, infrastructure, and space-related matters across ECEE and SIE.  

    • Coordinate resolution of infrastructure issues, work orders, utility disruptions, equipment installations, vendor activities, and operational impacts.  

    • Support renovations, infrastructure improvements, modernization initiatives, laboratory moves, and operational continuity efforts.  

    • Maintain visibility into infrastructure conditions, space utilization, occupancy information, and emerging operational risks.  

    • Serve as the School-level coordinator for research, instructional, office, support, and shared-use space information and planning activities.  

    • Coordinate space requests, relocations, occupancy updates, and planning efforts in partnership with School leadership, FSE Facilities and Space Planning, and University Planning.  

    • Identify infrastructure, operational, and space-related needs and provide recommendations to support strategic planning and decision-making.  

    • Facilitate communication and coordination among faculty, staff, Facilities, vendors, and other stakeholders.  

     

    4. Reporting, Operational Systems, and Continuous Improvement 

    • Maintain dashboards, tracking systems, workflows, escalation processes, and reporting tools related to operations, safety, infrastructure, and space management activities.  

    • Maintain visibility into open operational issues, compliance activities, infrastructure concerns, and resolution timelines across both Schools.  

    • Analyze operational, safety, infrastructure, and space-related trends to support planning and decision-making.  

    • Prepare operational, safety, and facilities reports for School leadership, FSE Facilities, and FSE Safety.  

    • Maintain safety and space-related metrics, utilization data, occupancy information, and compliance reporting tools.  

    • Monitor performance indicators, audit findings, corrective actions, and recurring issues to support risk management and continuous improvement.  

    • Provide operational assessments and recommendations related to infrastructure, safety, space utilization, and facility planning priorities.  

    • Support data-driven operational planning and decision-making efforts across both Schools.  

     

    5. Cross-Functional Leadership and Communication 

    • Lead coordination efforts between faculty, researchers, students, FSE support units, EHS, Facilities, vendors, and operational support teams.  

    • Facilitate operational and safety meetings to review priorities, infrastructure issues, compliance concerns, and operational risks.  

    • Communicate operational priorities, infrastructure risks, project updates, issue status, and planning recommendations to stakeholders and leadership.  

    • Support alignment between School operations and FSE-wide standards, safety practices, infrastructure initiatives, and space planning efforts.  

    • Serve as a liaison between School leadership, faculty, staff, FSE Facilities, FSE Safety, University Planning, and other stakeholders regarding operational, safety, infrastructure, and space-related matters.  

    • Chair quarterly safety coordination meetings with laboratory managers and operational stakeholders.  

    • Serve as a key operational resource and partner to School and FSE leadership in support of operational excellence and institutional objectives 

     

    6. Instructional Laboratory and Student Support 

    • Coordinate with faculty and instructional laboratory staff to support instructional operations and laboratory readiness.  

    • Support training coordination and safe operational use of laboratory spaces and equipment.  

    • Provide operational leadership and guidance to student workers and laboratory support personnel, as appropriate 

    • Assist with operational planning related to instructional laboratory activities and evolving program needs.  

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, applied science, technology, facilities management, construction management, or a related field.

  • Experience leading operational coordination efforts across complex research, instructional, or operational environments.  

  • Experience supporting infrastructure planning, facilities coordination, operational risk management, or space management activities.  

  • Experience working across multiple campuses, departments, facilities, or stakeholder groups.  

  • Experience supporting research and instructional environments within a higher education, research, healthcare, or technical setting.  

  • Familiarity with university facilities systems, work order processes, safety programs, and space management practices.  

  • Demonstrated ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple operational initiatives and complex issues.  

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional coordination efforts without direct supervisory authority.  

  • Experience supporting laboratory safety programs, regulatory compliance activities, inspections, audits, or corrective action management.  

  • Experience supporting space management, space utilization analysis, occupancy tracking, or facility planning activities.  

  • Experience maintaining operational, safety, facility, laboratory, or space-related data and reporting systems.  

  • Experience developing dashboards, performance metrics, reporting tools, or operational tracking systems.  

Working Environment:

  • This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment with the option for hybrid or remote work, depending on business needs and company policy. Employees regularly use standard office equipment to analyze data, prepare reports, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders. The role requires prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer, with standing, walking, and participation in meetings.
