About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience and deep expertise in C#, .NET and Azure Cloud.
This is a senior technical role for an engineer who has extensive experience designing and scaling robust backend services, solving complex technical problems and driving architecture decisions.
The successful candidate will play a key role in evolving the backend platform, improving scalability and performance, and establishing best practices across engineering. You will be expected to demonstrate extreme ownership, strong technical judgement and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment.
Experience within fintech, payments or e-commerce is strongly preferred, particularly candidates who have worked on high-volume payment applications or transaction-heavy digital platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-performance, scalable backend systems using C# and .NET.
- Lead technical and architectural discussions relating to backend services.
- Design, implement and evolve microservices and service-oriented architectures.
- Drive the evolution of the existing platform towards a scalable, maintainable and future-proof architecture.
- Establish and promote engineering best practices across backend development.
- Ensure appropriate unit, integration and automated testing strategies are implemented.
- Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across distributed backend systems.
- Demonstrate strong debugging and root-cause analysis capabilities.
- Analyse and optimise application performance, scalability and reliability.
- Use observability and monitoring tooling to proactively identify performance and reliability issues.
- Conduct code reviews and provide technical guidance to other engineers.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and share technical expertise across teams.
- Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, DevOps, QA, product managers and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to Agile processes and continuously improve engineering methodologies.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend tools, frameworks and approaches that improve the platform.
- Contribute to the technical strategy, architecture and roadmap for backend services.
- Take ownership of technical decisions and ensure solutions are delivered to a high standard.
Core Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Extensive commercial experience with C# and .NET.
- Proven experience designing and building scalable backend services.
- Strong understanding of microservices and service-oriented architectures.
- Extensive experience with RESTful APIs.
- Strong experience working with Microsoft Azure Cloud.
- Experience with Azure services including:
- Azure Key Vault
- Azure App Configuration
- Azure Queueing/Messaging products
- Azure AD B2C
- Strong experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD and modern development practices.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Extensive SQL and NoSQL database design and development experience.
- Strong knowledge of caching strategies and distributed caching.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, codebase organisation and relevant design patterns.
- Excellent debugging, troubleshooting and performance optimisation skills.
- Experience with observability, monitoring and performance analysis tooling.
- Proven ability to conduct code reviews and mentor other engineers.
- Strong understanding of Agile software development methodologies.
Payments / Fintech / E-Commerce Experience
Candidates with experience in payments, fintech or e-commerce are strongly preferred.
The ideal candidate will have worked on applications where payments, transactions, financial data or high-volume customer activity are central to the product.
Advantageous Experience
- Previous experience in fintech, payments or proptech.
- Experience working in high-volume e-commerce environments.
- Strong knowledge of additional programming languages or frameworks.
- Programming experience with Golang, TypeScript or similar languages.
- AWS cloud-native experience.
- Azure or other cloud-related certifications.
- Experience leading technical initiatives or architecture projects.
