Description of Work

This position is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution located in Hookerton, NC. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in a close custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

 Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.  Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensures that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained.  Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.  Employees at this level supervise more staff than recognized in the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II.  Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or Correctional Housing Unit Manager.  Ensures that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed.  Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates.  Gives direction during drills, searches and in emergencies.  May refer offenders to restrictive housing for temporary assignment.  May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments.  Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters and work areas for contraband.  Investigates and takes action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes and complaints.  Prepares and reviews a variety of reports.  Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating and implementing employee discipline.  Conducts staff briefing sessions.  Performs other related duties as required.  Must be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Salary Range: $41,206 - $72,113

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Education Equivalency Verification

The State of North Carolina/Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) uses the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) as a referral resource for applicants who need to have their credentials certified as equivalent.

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference
