JOB SUMMARY
Under administrative review of the University Director of Athletics, develop and execute strategies for the recruitment of athletes and developing a regionally and nationally competitive team; organize and direct all aspects of the Cross Country / Track and Field program, organizing practice sessions to enhance the team’s performance as a highly visible sport; supervise staff involved in the program and oversee budget.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and execute a strategy for building a regionally and nationally competitive team.
Oversee the plan for season, including competitive schedule and practices, i.e., facilities, officials, practice schedule, supervise travel arrangements for away competition and strategize for subsequent contests.
In conjunction with strength staff, develop training and conditioning program; organize all practice sessions to enhance team performance.
Conceive, implement, and supervise strategies to recruit high-profile Cross Country / Track and Field student-athletes through scouting, attending competitions, and home visits, in accordance with NCAA rules and regulations.
Serve as ambassador for the University’s Athletic Program through articulation of its mission, public speaking to promote Cross Country / Track and Field in the state, region, and nation, and communicate with media, alumni, parents, and friends of the University.
Oversees student-athletes academic progress, welfare and retention.
OTHER DUTIES AND ASSIGNMENTS
Selects, supervises, and evaluates assistant coaching staff.
Manages budget, equipment procurement, team travel, etc.
Organizes fundraisings and booster cultivation.
Monitors affiliated professional organizations.
Serves in administrative assignments.
Assist in the development of strategies to increase visibility and attendance at home and away events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree.
Experience: At least 5 years of coaching experience, including three years of head coaching experience. Collegiate playing experience. Thorough knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student athletes.
Licenses or Certifications: CPR, First Aid and AED certification. Current and valid driver's license.
Financial Responsibility: Processes or records financial transactions within established guidelines and safeguards. Reviews and/or approves financial transactions at the function or department level. May require some interpretation of policies. Process purchase requests and make budgetary decisions within a set budget for the program.
Supervision: Training/coaching other employees. Scheduling and providing daily work direction to other employees. Hiring.
Special Knowledge: Basic computer skills, including ability to utilize Microsoft applications and recruiting/compliance software (Front rush). Good relationship skills with the university community. Ability to work independently and to work evenings and weekends to accomplish necessary tasks.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to travel; heavy lifting required (50 pounds and over); may be required to work when the university is closed. Ability to work in less than ideal weather conditions (i.e. high heat and below freezing temperatures with various precipitation). Ability to work nights, weekends, and some holidays
COMPENSATION / TOTAL REWARDS
The salary for this position will commensurate with experience. The range for the position is between $55,000 - $65,000. It is competitive, market-based, and aligned with the University’s financial framework.
