Description

Under direction, conducts inspections and area surveys to implement a Property Maintenance Code Enforcement Program designed to eliminate neighborhood blight and substandard structures; inspects residential, commercial, and industrial structures, and performs related public information work on home maintenance and renovations; does related work as required.
  • Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and surrounding areas to identify and correct health, safety, and structural violations of the Property Maintenance Code. 
  • Serves property owners with notices of violation. 
  • Reinspects residential, commercial, and industrial structures after completion of repairs, to determine whether violations have been corrected and that repair work as been performed according to Property Maintenance Code requirements. 
  • Conducts neighborhood area surveys designed to establish need for public and private neighborhood improvement. 
  • Speaks with individual property owners and neighborhood groups, concerning technical requirements of the Property Maintenance Code; provides advice about possible financing methods to make required improvements. 
  • Prepares reports of investigations. 
  • Testifies in court on housing violations. 
  • Maintains records and files. 
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in the preparation or revision of building construction plans, the inspection or supervision of building construction, and/or as a journeyman in the building construction structural trades. NOTE: Successful completion of a course in principles of housing inspection may be substituted for six (6) months of the above experience. Such courses are available at local community colleges. NOTE:  A current and valid license as an Inspector, Multiple Dwelling, issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, may also substitute for six (6) months experience indicated above, except when the license is required as indicated below. LICENSE: Applicants conducting inspections under the New Jersey Hotel and Multiple Dwelling Law (NJSA 55:13A-1 et seq.), for the State Local Cooperative Housing Inspection Program (SLCHIP), must possess a valid license as an inspector Multiple Dwelling, issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. NOTE:  In addition to the Inspector, Multiple Dwelling license, applicants in municipalities that are the local enforcing agency of the New Jersey Hotel and Multiple Dwelling Law (NJSA 55:13A-1 et seq.) in the State Local Cooperative Housing Inspection Program (SLCHIP), may be required to possess a valid license as a Housing Code Official, issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicles, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
