Opportunity Profile

Location: Central New Jersey

Position Title: Senior Mechanical Project Manager

The Opportunity:

A highly respected and growing mechanical contracting organization is seeking a seasoned Senior Mechanical Project Manager to join its leadership team during an exciting period of expansion. This is not a replacement position. It is a newly created role designed to support the company's increasing project volume and ambitious growth objectives.

Reporting directly to the Director of Projects, this individual will play a critical role in leading complex mechanical construction projects throughout New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area. The successful candidate will oversee projects involving HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal systems, managing all phases from award through closeout.

This opportunity offers the chance to become part of a respected organization that has built a strong reputation within highly technical and demanding markets, including pharmaceutical, life sciences, healthcare, institutional, and mission-critical facilities. Project managers are entrusted with meaningful responsibilities and have direct influence over project execution, client satisfaction, profitability, and continued growth.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned mechanical construction professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys managing technically challenging projects, and appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with a highly experienced project team. This position provides exposure to a diverse project portfolio that includes major healthcare facilities, educational institutions, advanced manufacturing environments, and landmark projects throughout the Northeast.

For professionals seeking an opportunity to move beyond simply managing projects and instead become a key contributor to a growing organization with strong leadership, financial backing, and long-term vision, this is a highly attractive career opportunity.

The Company:

Founded more than five decades ago, this organization has established itself as one of the region's premier mechanical contracting firms. The company generates approximately $40 million to $50 million in annual revenue and specializes in HVAC, plumbing, piping, sheet metal, controls, and building automation solutions.

Serving commercial and industrial customers throughout the Northeast, the company has developed particular expertise within life sciences, pharmaceutical, healthcare, institutional, and other mission-critical environments where system performance and reliability are essential. The organization is known for its ability to execute both design-build and plan-spec projects while maintaining a strong focus on quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

As a union mechanical contractor with a highly skilled workforce, dedicated estimating and drafting departments, and an experienced operations team, the company has the resources and infrastructure necessary to successfully deliver complex projects. The organization is backed by private equity ownership, providing both financial stability and a commitment to continued strategic growth.

Recent and notable projects include major healthcare facilities, educational modernization projects, and high-profile work such as a major museum project in Manhattan and a significant hospital mechanical construction project.

The Boss:

This position reports to the Director of Projects.

The Director of Projects was recently promoted into the leadership role after successfully serving as a Project Manager within the organization. The promotion reflects both strong leadership capabilities and the confidence the company has in the individual's ability to guide the project management team through its next phase of growth.

Prior to joining the company, this leader owned and operated a construction business and later held project leadership responsibilities within a major pharmaceutical organization, where significant capital and facility projects were managed. This diverse background provides a unique perspective that combines contractor expertise with owner-side project leadership experience.

Candidates joining the organization will have the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative and supportive leader who understands project execution from multiple perspectives and is committed to building a strong, high-performing project organization.

The Position:

The Senior Mechanical Project Manager will assume leadership responsibility for multiple mechanical construction projects involving HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal systems. This individual will coordinate project activities from initial award through successful completion while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to client expectations.

The role requires extensive interaction with clients, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, field personnel, and internal departments including estimating, drafting, and executive leadership. Success in this position will be measured through project performance, client satisfaction, team collaboration, and profitability.

Essential Functions (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Manage mechanical construction projects from award through closeout.
  • Direct all project activities involving HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal installations.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Coordinate with clients, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and field operations personnel.
  • Lead project planning, procurement, subcontract administration, and change order management.
  • Monitor labor utilization, project costs, and profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual requirements, safety standards, and quality expectations.
  • Partner with estimating, drafting, operations, and executive leadership teams to ensure successful project execution.
  • Foster strong customer relationships and identify opportunities for repeat business.
  • Successfully manage both design-build and plan-spec project delivery environments.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of mechanical construction project management experience.
  • Strong background managing HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal projects.
  • Demonstrated success managing projects ranging from approximately $500,000 to $5 million.
  • Experience overseeing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical systems, construction processes, and project delivery methodologies.
  • Strong budgeting, scheduling, client management, and subcontractor coordination skills.
  • Stable employment history within commercial or industrial mechanical contracting environments.
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative, team-oriented culture.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Significant industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Prior trade experience as a pipefitter, plumber, sheet metal worker, or related mechanical professional is highly desirable.
  • Experience serving pharmaceutical, life sciences, healthcare, institutional, or mission-critical markets is preferred.
  • Experience operating within a union mechanical contracting environment is advantageous.

Competencies:

  • Leadership and project execution
  • Financial and business acumen
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Client relationship management
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Risk management
  • Attention to detail
  • Results-oriented mindset

Work Environment:

This role operates within a professional construction environment requiring regular interaction with project sites, client facilities, and the corporate office. The position involves coordination with field operations personnel, subcontractors, vendors, and project stakeholders across multiple active construction projects. Travel throughout New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area should be expected based on project needs.

Compensation:

The company offers a competitive executive-level compensation package that includes performance-based incentives, vehicle allowance, comprehensive healthcare coverage, a company-sponsored retirement program, generous paid time off, and long-term career advancement opportunities within a growing organization.

The organization is committed to rewarding performance while providing employees with the resources, support, and stability necessary to build successful long-term careers.
