Description
I. Purpose of Position
This position is responsible for directing Product Design Engineering Group, whose primary responsibilities are product design and qualification of cable and ABF products including finished products, raw materials, manufacturing processes and measurement techniques. Product costs and performance specifications are key responsibilites. Also, responsibilities include representation and oversight of industry technology. This position is also responsible for identifying and developing cable materials for new applications, for improved processibility and reliability, for cost reduction and for maintenance of secondary vendors. This requires the development of product qualification test plans and incoming material test requirements.
II. General Functions/Specific Responsibilities
1. Initiate product design in conjunction with Marketing and Senior Management.
2. Supervise engineers through their daily activities and project works.
3. Plan short-term schedule of project activities.
4. Review test reports generated by labs and approve.
5. Review and approve design sheets, material specs and other documents.
6. Review and approve or initiate trial production request.
7. Give technical support to production, QA and other departments.
8. Initiate development projects and maintain budgetary control.
9. Conduct detailed design/performance studies for materials/cables.
10. Conduct or coordinate trials/experiments to develop new material/designs/process through finalqualification.
11. Develop and issue raw material specifications.
12. Coordinate/oversee new material or secondary vendor qualification
13. Review and insure compliance with material specifications.
14. Investigate/search for new cable materials.
III. Duties Performed Occasionally or Periodically:
1. Plan long-term activities/projects in the group.
2. Plan budget for the group and review/analyze actual results.
3. Conduct cost analysis of product designs.
4. Assign projects to engineers.
5. Meet customers for technical info exchange and product promotion.
6. Meet vendors for technical information exchange.
7. Exchange information with related company (by phone, fax, mail or visit)
8. Review customer's specification/technical documents.
9. Attend meetings outside the company.
10. Prepare and hold Design Reviews for new materials/cables.
11. Provide timely reports on design/performance issues.
12. Write technical reports and present papers at conferences.
13. Participate in Standard Bodies
14. Submit and apply for patents
IV. Requirement for Position:
Broad knowledge of a general technical or professional field such as finance, marketing, insurance, business administration, accounting, or engineering. Equivalent to a complete college or university education.
Ten years minimum experience in the industry.
Other Special Knowledge or Skill that is required to perform this job:
a. Good communication with subordinates.
VI. Responsibility:
Probable errors are difficult to detect such as recommendation of unsuitable equipment or services resulting in excessive costs, inadequate services over an extended period, etc. Work not subject to audit or verification and involves considerable accuracy and responsibility.
Probable errors may involve major expenditures for programs, projects, equipment, facilities or loss of important customer accounts. Duties may involve effective recommendations, preparation or presentation of data upon which top management bases important decisions. Such errors or actions would be detected by high scrap in manufacturing or failure in the field due to design Deficiency and/or through loss of major customers
