Director, Global Financial Solutions (GFS) - Structurer, Insurance-Linked Financial Solutions
Department Overview
The Global Financial Solutions Group (GFS) in EMEA plays a pivotal role in advancing regional client strategies through the delivery of highly customised, solutions-based financial products. With a strong focus on innovation and sophisticated structuring capabilities, GFS offers a comprehensive range of solutions spanning both Corporate-linked and Insurance-linked transactions.
Leveraging expertise across the full transaction lifecycle, GFS provides origination, structuring, underwriting, execution, syndication and risk management services to MUFG's key client base. Through its end-to-end capabilities, GFS delivers tailored financial strategies designed to address complex client needs, optimise capital structures and support effective risk management, whilst creating long-term value for clients and stakeholders across the EMEA region.
Main Purpose of the Role
The role holder will be responsible for the structuring, execution and ongoing management of Insurance-linked Financial Solutions transactions across the EMEA region.
The role focuses on delivering innovative capital and risk management solutions for European insurance companies, including:
- Capital optimisation transactions
- Reinsurance sidecar debt financings
- Structured corporate lending solutions
- Insurance Letters of Credit (LCs)
- Other bespoke insurance-linked financing structures
The successful candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders across GFS, Coverage, Risk, Legal, Compliance and international product teams to originate, structure and execute transactions that support client objectives while meeting MUFG's risk, regulatory and strategic requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy, Planning and Business Execution
- Supporting the delivery of departmental business strategy and objectives within the Insurance-linked Financial Solutions product domain.
- Meeting or exceeding agreed financial and non-financial performance targets.
- Managing and monitoring assigned transaction portfolios and exposures.
- Ensuring all activities are conducted within approved mandates, policies and risk appetite.
- Identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand the Insurance-linked Financial Solutions franchise.
- Working collaboratively across GFS and MUFG's global platform to deliver integrated client solutions.
- Contributing to budgeting, planning and resource allocation activities where required.
- Supporting product innovation and development of new client solutions.
Transaction Structuring and Execution
- Structure and execute complex insurance-linked transactions across multiple jurisdictions.
- Develop and maintain sophisticated financial models and analytical tools.
- Assess transaction economics, regulatory implications, capital impacts and risk-adjusted returns.
- Prepare transaction approval materials and present recommendations to internal stakeholders and committees.
- Coordinate transaction execution with internal and external parties, including clients, legal counsel, rating agencies, consultants and investors.
- Contribute to the development of market-leading structuring methodologies and capabilities.
- Maintain deep knowledge of insurance markets, regulatory developments and emerging industry trends.
Risk Management
- Ensuring transactions are structured appropriately and remain within approved risk appetite.
- Conducting detailed transaction analysis from credit, market, capital, regulatory and reputational risk perspectives.
- Monitoring portfolio performance and emerging risks.
- Escalating issues promptly in accordance with delegated authority and internal governance requirements.
- Supporting the ongoing enhancement of risk management models, monitoring tools and processes.
- Protecting and enhancing the reputation of MUFG and the wider Group through sound judgement and disciplined risk management.
Franchise Development
- Support the growth of a sustainable, client-focused Insurance-linked Financial Solutions franchise.
- Identify opportunities to deepen client relationships through innovative structuring solutions.
- Collaborate with Coverage, Capital Markets, Credit, Syndication and other product areas to maximise cross-platform opportunities.
- Promote MUFG's broader capabilities and support delivery of the One MUFG strategy.
- Contribute to market intelligence and thought leadership within the insurance sector.
Controls, Governance and Compliance
- Adhering to all relevant risk, compliance and governance frameworks.
- Maintaining appropriate records and documentation.
- Ensuring transactions comply with legal, regulatory and internal approval requirements.
- Supporting regulatory reviews, audits and internal control processes as required.
- Demonstrating conduct consistent with MUFG's values and expected standards of behaviour.
Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders across EMEA and globally.
- Collaborate closely with Coverage, Risk, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Operations and other business functions.
- Share best practice and support the continuous development of GFS capabilities.
- Contribute to cross-functional initiatives and strategic projects that support the wider objectives of MUFG.
Education and Professional Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Law or a related discipline.
- Strong quantitative and analytical background.
- Advanced financial modelling and valuation skills.
Relevant Experience
- Significant experience in structured finance, insurance-linked finance, capital solutions or related investment banking activities.
- Demonstrated track record of structuring and executing insurance-focused transactions.
- Strong understanding of insurance company balance sheets, capital frameworks and regulatory requirements.
- Experience managing multiple transactions simultaneously within demanding timelines.
- Proven ability to work independently and take ownership of complex workstreams.
- Experience interacting with senior internal and external stakeholders.
Technical Skills
- Advanced quantitative, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong financial modelling and transaction analysis skills.
- Knowledge of insurance capital optimisation and risk transfer structures.
- Understanding of European insurance regulatory frameworks, including Solvency II and related market developments.
- Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
