Senior Chemist

Overview

Element is seeking a Senior Analytical Chemist in Midland, Michigan to lead testing projects and provide expert analytical support for a wide range of consumer products, including topicals, aerosols, healthcare items, and OTC products. In this role, you will utilize a variety of advanced analytical instrumentation to support lot release, R&D initiatives, and contamination investigations, while directly interfacing with customers to deliver accurate, actionable results. Our Midland laboratory is part of Element’s global network of over 9,000 experts, offering comprehensive testing solutions across consumer products, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. The facility is dedicated to helping clients ensure product safety and compliance, providing analytical and chemical characterization services in a GLP/cGMP‑style environment. Responsibilities

• Analyzes samples and develops methods using a variety of analytical instruments possibly including but not limited to DSC, TGA, rheometer, UV-Vis, FTIR, ICP-MS, LC, GC and automated titration.
• Is an expert user in multiple analytical techniques
• Executes complex, multifaceted analytical projects in support of client needs. Serves as lead expert in testing techniques, troubleshooting and equipment support.
• Delivers timely reports and data analysis to meet customer needs
• Follows all safety requirements including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Mentors new employees, trains in areas of proficiency, and sets a good example for all Element Midland practices and SOPs.
• Generates client reports and supporting laboratory documentation in compliance with company SOPs
• Complies with all company SOPs. Initiates SOP change when warranted.
• Communicates effectively with clients and colleagues through written and oral presentation. Is capable of leading technical discussions with clients.
• Implements new equipment, processes and methods independently, capable of conducting appropriate qualification and validation activities
• Takes responsibility for lab instruments and sees to their care and upkeep. May be primary contact for significant external vendors.
• Is client focused as demonstrated by delivering projects in a timely manner with minimal errors.
•  Demonstrates expertise in the analysis of data, from the qualitative to the rigorously statistical, strong problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and analytical abilities
•  Willing to assist in other activities from time to time that may be requested by the department manager to assist in the execution of Element Material Technology annual targets and budget

Skills / Qualifications

• Have a bachelors or masters degree and 5+ years experience or Ph.D. with 2+ years experience in a similar role.
• Have the ability to work in teams under pressure
• Good English communication skills: reading, writing, speaking.
• Good math skills
• Familiarity with TGA, DSC, or LC/MS strongly preferred
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical problems
• Demonstrated ability to learn new analytical techniques
• Knowledge and experience of safe operation of testing equipment and operating in an independent / chemistry / consultant laboratory
