A Day in the Life

The Acute Care & Monitoring (ACM) business develops technologies that support clinicians in high-acuity environments, including the Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Department. This role joins the airway management R&D team responsible for developing next-generation hardware-enabled medical devices that integrate electronics, embedded systems, and user-centered design to improve patient care and clinician workflow. Originating from Medtronic’s acquisition of Aircraft Medical, the team combines focused product innovation with the scale and resources of a global medical technology organization.
This position is located at the Medtronic Lafayette, Colorado campus and is an onsite role. The role works closely with hardware, firmware, mechanical, systems, quality, and clinical partners throughout the product development lifecycle, from concept development through verification and design transfer.

         

         

As a Hardware Engineer, you will support the development of embedded electronic hardware for airway management products used in acute care environments. Contribute to the design, prototyping, verification, and integration of electronic systems while working under the guidance of experienced engineers. The role provides hands-on exposure to circuit design, printed circuit board development, laboratory testing, and medical device product development within a cross-functional engineering team.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop electronic schematics and printed circuit board (PCB) layouts following established design standards and engineering review processes.
• Perform component selection, datasheet analysis, bill of materials (BOM) maintenance, and engineering change documentation.
• Conduct circuit calculations, simulations, and technical evaluations to support design verification and reliability objectives.
• Build, modify, and troubleshoot prototype hardware using laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, logic analyzers, and electronic loads.
• Support board bring-up, fault isolation, and hardware-software integration activities for embedded systems.
• Execute verification testing, environmental evaluations, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) pre-compliance activities while maintaining design documentation and traceability.
• Create test reports, design records, and technical documentation supporting quality, risk management, and product development requirements.
• Collaborate with firmware, systems, mechanical, quality, suppliers, and manufacturing partners to resolve technical issues and improve product designs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering and 0-2 years of hardware design experience, including internships, research projects, or equivalent hands-on engineering work.
• Experience completing at least one hardware development cycle from schematic capture through PCB layout, fabrication, and board bring-up.
• Experience with communication protocols including Inter-Integrated Circuit (I2C), Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), or Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART).
• Experience using electronic computer-aided design (ECAD) tools for schematic capture and PCB layout.
• Experience using laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, DC power supplies, and electronic measurement tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in regulated industries such as medical devices, automotive, or aerospace.
• Knowledge of IEC 60601, IEC 61000, ISO 13485, or ISO 14971 standards and quality systems.
• Experience with embedded C/C++ debugging, hardware diagnostics, or embedded system bring-up.
• Experience with battery-powered designs, wireless connectivity hardware, or high-speed digital interfaces.
• Experience using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Git, or JIRA for test automation, data analysis, and development workflows.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$76,800.00 - $115,200.00

 

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
