DEFINITION
Under close and general supervision, performs a variety of routine labor tasks in the maintenance and repair of streets, parks, buildings and related facilities, depending on assignment; to clean and maintain storm drains; and to operate a variety of tools and equipment in a safe manner. The employee may be assigned to work weekends and evenings.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class where individuals possessing basic and safe skills, along with the ability to learn, are assigned to work crews and provided with training experience. Incumbents possess some basic maintenance experience upon hire and receive training in maintenance practices, as well as in the operation of a variety of power tools and light equipment within their area of assignment. Incumbents will work alongside other maintenance personnel, as well as independently.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general, technical, and functional supervision from a higher-level Maintenance Workers.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Class specifications are only intended to present a descriptive summary of the range of duties and responsibilities associated with specified positions. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with maintaining a safe and presentable environment through regular maintenance activities at various public parks, streets, and facilities.
- Assist with the maintenance of City parks and facilities; remove trash, litter, leaves, and tree trimmings.
- Assist with weed abatement; including the application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
- Assist with landscaping; trim, prune, plant, water, stake, and maintain City trees and shrubs.
- Assist with facility maintenance; painting, lifting, moving, woodwork, and sign replacements.
- Assist with street and sidewalk maintenance; asphalt work, concrete work.
- Assist with reporting, documenting, and removing graffiti.
- Assist with setting up for special events.
- Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Safely operate a variety of hand tools and light to heavy equipment; maintain and clean tools, vehicles and equipment.
- Work independently in the absence of on-site supervision.
- Receive and respond to questions from the public; provide information as appropriate to resolve public service complaints.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, other agencies and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: No formal experience is required. Experience in general construction is highly desirable.
AND
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
License and Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of hire, a valid California Class “C” driver’s license.
Other Requirements: Employees may be assigned to work weekends and/or holidays and are required to respond to after-hour calls, as necessary.
