Description
Department: Revenue (Focus Area: Applications Engineering)
Reports To: Chief Commercial Officer
Location: Remote or Leesburg, Virginia
uAvionix is an agile and disruptive aviation hardware and services organization driven to change the face of airspace integration. We’re passionate innovators delivering products with more features, tighter integration and unheard-of size, weight and power.
The Applications Engineer is a front-end, revenue-facing technical role responsible for shaping the solutions that win business. Working alongside the direct business development team, the Applications Engineer engages customers early to understand their operational requirements, translates those requirements into uAvionix product configurations that can be quoted, and proves out the fit through demonstrations and evaluations. The role may extend into training, or implementation and integration activity where a technical presence is needed to bring a sold solution into operation.
Serves as the primary technical authority on customer-facing sales engagements, bridging the gap between sales and core engineering. The role is responsible for deeply understanding both micro-avionics hardware (transponders, transceivers, ADS-B) and software ecosystems (Skyline, Surveillance / Flightline), answering complex technical inquiries directly, and curating escalate-only questions back to product engineering.
This position requires a self-motivated, independent, and highly organized problem-solver who is comfortable operating at the intersection of engineering and sales. The Applications Engineer carries field and customer insight back into the engineering organization, playing an integral part in new product design and existing product enhancement. This is not a sustaining technical support role — ongoing customer service, troubleshooting, repair, and RMA activity are owned by the uAvionix support organization.
This role will report to the UAS Business Unit, but will support other Business Units including Defense, Airports & ATM, and Crewed Aviation as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Engage customers directly to develop a thorough understanding of their technical, operational, and mission requirements.
- Shape customer-specific solutions and product configurations that can be quoted and define the technical scope behind each opportunity.
- Provide technical advisement to the BD/sales team and to customers throughout the pursuit and capture process.
- Contribute technical content to proposals, RFI and RFP responses, and statements of work.
- Serve as the primary technical buffer and filter between sales pursuits and the core engineering team, triaging client technical questions, resolving inquiries independently where possible, and structuring/curating only high-impact engineering escalations.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
- Perform customer-specific product demonstrations that show how a product meets customer requirements.
- Manage loaner and evaluation equipment and guide customers through the evaluation period to a successful technical outcome.
- Provide product and solution training to both the sales team and customers.
- Willingness and ability to cross-train team members on specialized skills to improve overall team effectiveness.
- Support product-to-program integration in conjunction with the BD/sales, engineering, and support teams.
- Participate in implementation and integration activity as needed to bring a sold solution into operation.
- Play an integral part in new product designs and existing product enhancements by providing structured field and customer feedback to engineering.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, industry, contractual, and company regulations, standards, specifications, and best practices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Working understanding of avionics hardware protocols, RF/transponder systems, and software platforms/APIs (Command & Control, cloud-based situational awareness platforms).
- Consultative approach to customer engagement, with the ability to uncover requirements and shape them into a viable solution.
- Proven experience demonstrating products and training others on their use and integration.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
- Demonstrated capability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and run technical scoping calls independently.
- Ability to work independently from a home office and manage multiple customer engagements simultaneously.
- Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach to addressing customer needs.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Willingness to travel as needed for customer engagements, product demonstrations, and evaluations. During peak short duration program times, travel requirements may increase.
- Ability to pass background checks in order to obtain security clearance for access to customer facilities and sensitive information.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio, and Access).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in engineering, applications engineering, systems engineering, technical support, field engineering, or similar technical role.
- Experience in aviation, air traffic control, flight test, UAS, or telecommunications environments.
- Experience with UAS architectures, avionics integration, RF communications/datalinks, or C2/surveillance software platforms.
- FAA Part 61 Pilot Certificate is a plus.
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is a plus.
- Active security clearance, or the ability to obtain one, is a plus.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of demonstration and test equipment.
- Comfortable working in field environments, including flight line, hangar, laboratory, and outdoor customer sites.
- Prolonged periods of standing, kneeling, or working in confined spaces as needed to support installation, integration, and demonstration activity.
