SUMMARY The Observability Systems Engineer owns significant portions of observability systems and supports complex integrations across cloud and on-prem infrastructure. This role focuses on improving system reliability and performance through proactive monitoring, correlation, and analysis of system behaviors. It requires cross-functional collaboration, technical leadership in design, and mentorship of junior engineers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead implementation and tuning of observability platforms and telemetry pipelines
• Analyze and improve alerting strategy to reduce noise and increase signal
• Champion root cause analysis and implement improvements to prevent recurrence
• Collaborate with architecture and SRE teams to align observability strategy
• Own key components of the observability stack including automation and scalability
• Drive adoption of observability standards and best practices across teams
• Provide mentoring and training to junior engineers
• Support high-severity incidents and postmortems
• Support, maintain, and resolve problems for the tools and services owned by the Observability & Automation Tools team in live production systems, with occasional on call availability

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
• Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or an advanced degree with 3+ years of experience; or equivalent related work experience
• Advanced proficiency with observability platforms like Splunk, Datadog, AppDynamics, or similar
• Experience with OpenTelemetry and correlating metrics, logs, and traces
• Strong scripting and automation skills (Python, Bash, PowerShell)
• Familiarity with containerized environments and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with Terraform and cloud-native monitoring in AWS or Azure
• Strong incident management and root cause analysis capabilities
• Excellent communication and cross-team collaboration skills

This position requires fluent written and oral communication in English.
