Job Description Summary

In this role, you will perform a wide range of complex maintenance and troubleshooting tasks to support operations at GNF’s Fuel Manufacturing Operations facility. The position focuses on supporting automated manufacturing systems and control equipment through PLC diagnostics, instrumentation calibration, and both electrical and mechanical repair work. You will maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and modify automated equipment and control systems, including PLC-based machinery, electromechanical devices, process instrumentation, and nuclear measurement or radiographic systems. The role requires proficiency in reading technical documentation, using advanced test equipment, and collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure equipment reliability, system accuracy, and compliance with operational standards.

This is for a 2nd shift position. Typical working hours are 3PM - 11PM but may vary to support business need. Starting pay is $42.96/hour. After 6 months of satisfactory performance the pay will increase to $43.61/hour. In addition, there is a $1/hour bonus for working an off-shift schedule.

Essential Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain, repair, calibrate, and perform preventive maintenance on automated manufacturing and quality assurance systems, including PLC-controlled machinery, mechanical/electromechanical equipment, process instrumentation, nuclear measurement, radiographic, and ultrasonic systems.
  • Must be able to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, parts lists, and ladder logic. Must be able to read and understand vendor maintenance manuals for proper calibration and maintenance methods.
  • Must be skilled in troubleshooting computer hardware, software and interface peripherals. Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of processes associated with mechanical, electronic and microprocessor based programmable controllers. Must keep abreast of state-of-the-art process control by self-study, in-plant training or vendor schooling as required.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art test equipment and diagnostic software programs to troubleshoot and correct both hardware and software related problems.  Must have an understanding of software programming and be able to modify and document software changes. Must be able to use a variety of test equipment such as Simpson meter, amp probe, oscilloscope, signal generators, programmable power supplies and multimeters.
  • Provide training and diagnostic assistance for other personnel in work group as needed.
  • Install new or modified equipment or systems and make modifications to existing systems including updating documentation.
  • Must be able to generate equipment information, preventative maintenance and calibration procedures for an auditable documentation system.
  • Consult with vendors, manufacturing engineers, maintenance personnel concerning equipment operation, troubleshooting and repair as required to minimize downtime.
  • Must, through self-study, on-the-job training, in-plant and vendor training courses, attain a thorough knowledge of a wide variety of automated equipment and nuclear measurement techniques. Must keep abreast of the latest development in state-of-the-art electronics and computer technology.
  • Work with quality assurance, engineering and other groups in resolving equipment problems.
  • Keep facilities, equipment and work areas clean and orderly and adhere to good housekeeping practices and using good judgment in performing all work safely. Will be responsible for the cleanliness and orderliness of work areas.
  • Follow safety regulations and procedures while performing assigned duties and tasks. Must comply with provisions set forth in the plant safety manual and use good judgment in performing all work tasks safely. Must assume a leading role in counseling trainee personnel in proper safety methods.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Technical school associate degree in electronics, instrumentation, or micro-electronic solid-state technology; or equivalent military, industrial, or college training with five years of experience in maintenance or fabrication of related industrial equipment. Training, education and experience should include electronic, electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical, optical, ultrasonic, nuclear measurement, radiography and computer disciplines.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing industrial, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical control equipment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience reading and interpreting drawings, schematics, ladder logic, instruction manuals and logic symbol schematics. Must be able to logically troubleshoot control systems to identify software and hardware problems.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience and working knowledge of state-of-the-art test equipment; such as multimeters, digital oscilloscopes, programmable power supplies, calibrators, digital analyzers, microprocessor development systems, multi-channel analyzers, etc.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with basic hand tools, soldering equipment, electrical and electronics test equipment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with microprocessor software structure and commands.
  • Minimum of two (2) years troubleshooting techniques and repair of state-of-the-art electronic systems and circuits.
  • At least 2 of the following:
    • One (1) year building control panels, including mounting and wiring of controls equipment and power supplies
    • One (1) year performing repair and maintenance on automated machinery
    • One (1) year of experience performing maintenance and calibration of nuclear measurement equipment.
    • One (1) year of experience maintaining process control using programmable logic controllers.
    • One (1) year of experience troubleshooting and repairing circuits at the board level, including soldering and de-soldering SMT components.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to take the lead in troubleshooting and perform corrective action.
  • Ability to read and understand written documents and procedures such as P&Ps, EOPs, and ESIs.
  • Ability to maintain high level of concentration, attention to detail and analytical ability is required to develop and troubleshoot complicated mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic and microprocessor-based equipment.
  • Ability to document work in order to help enhance skills of lower rate personnel.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to move around equipment, climb and work at elevated levels and in confined spaces. Ability to use ladders, go into pits and climb scaffolds. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and work in awkward positions while performing maintenance tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to work in Radiological Controlled Access Areas, pass pulmonary function test and wear proper radiological personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and breathing air supplied hoods.
  • Willingness to work other shifts as needed to support the business.
  • Must be familiar with and able to work to the National Electrical Code.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime without previous notice as necessary to meet business maintenance requirements.
  • Valid Driver’s License. Must obtain fork truck/aerial lift certification.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability and willingness to pass background check and site security requirements to access and perform work in the Controlled Access Area.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft suite, access, and retrieval of information from the Internet, and experience updating maintenance and shop systems.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations, read complex technical manuals.
