Assistant City Attorney I:  $8,224.00 - $10,695.00 Monthly

Assistant City Attorney II: $10,105.00 - $13,139.00 Monthly

Assistant City Attorney I:

About the Job:

Under the direction of the City Attorney, assist in performing a wide variety of professional legal duties which include providing services for all departments and governing bodies of the city as directed by the City Attorney.  Responsibilities involve handling a variety of civil and criminal law issues, including preparing and trying cases, contested administrative hearings, drafting resolutions and documents and rendering legal opinions.  Work is reviewed through inspection of casework, records and documents, and through periodic conferences.


Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Perform legal research and prepare opinions on various legal problems for city departments, governing boards or officials.

  • Prepare and draft ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases and other legal documents and instruments for various city departments; review legal contracts and other documents for compliance with legal requirements.

  • Provide analysis and response to legislative developments and city and public inquiries.

  • Investigate claims and complaints by or against the city and recommend action to be taken.

  • Prepare cases for hearings and represent the city in hearings.

  • Serve as a prosecuting attorney for the city; prepare and try cases both with and without juries.

  • Supervise the municipal housing inspection program, instruct inspection personnel in proper procedures; prosecute housing code violators when conditions warrant.

  • Prepare and trial of drug nuisance actions.

  • Perform related work and special projects as assigned.

Assistant City Attorney II:

About the Job:

Under the direction of the City Attorney, provide a variety of legal services to all departments and divisions of the city, including City Administration and City Council.  Responsibilities include performing both civil and criminal legal casework, as well as drafting a wide variety of legal documents and correspondence, including ordinances, policies, resolutions and opinions.  Work may include supervision of other attorneys and staff.  Work is reviewed through inspection of casework, records and documents, and through periodic conferences.  The appointment of level II or III status will be determined by the level of complexity of assignments and scope and nature of the responsibilities required by the ongoing nature of the assigned case load.


Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Provide expert professional opinions, services and recommendations to City Administration, legislative offices and departments on a variety of legal matters to ensure proper fulfillment of city functions and compliance with the law.

  • Represent and advise City Council, Administration and/or departments in litigation and/or hearings as required.

  • Resolve claims and disputes prior to litigation.

  • Research, prepare and present cases for trial and/or appellate proceedings using legal reference materials such as case reporters, state, federal and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.

  • Assist in pre-trial discovery, make oral arguments and conduct witness examinations at administrative hearings and trials.

  • Negotiate cases to enhance opportunities for settlement in lieu of further litigation.

  • Draft ordinances, resolutions, policies, contracts and other legal documents/correspondence.

  • Provide training and advice to the Police Department.

  • Serve as a prosecuting attorney for the city; prepare and try cases both with and without juries.

  • Prosecute criminal violations of city ordinances, traffic infractions or parking violations.

  • Review and draft proposed and new local, state and federal legislation.

  • May act as a lead attorney; provide supervision and training of staff as directed by the City Attorney.

  • Oversee retained attorneys representing the city.

  • Provide interpretation of city codes and policies.

  • Perform related work and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 


Assistant City Attorney I:
 A combination of education and related experience may substitute for education requirements.

  • Law degree and
  • 0-2 years of experience in professional legal work preferred and
  • Admission to the Washington State Bar Association.


Assistant City Attorney II:
 A combination of education and related experience may substitute for education requirements.

  • Law degree and
  • Minimum of 3 years as a practicing licensed attorney and
  • Admission to the Washington State Bar Association.
