General Description

Election Workers play a vital role in ensuring the smooth and fair operation of elections. This position involves assisting voters, managing polling locations, and handling election equipment and paperwork. Election Workers must be reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Training: Attend mandatory training sessions to learn election procedures, equipment operation, and voter assistance protocols.

  • Equipment Pickup: Judges will collect election equipment from the elections office.

  • Polling Location Setup: Set up the polling location, including arranging voting booths, signage, and election equipment.

  • Voter Check-In: Assist voters with the check-in process, verifying identification and eligibility as required.

  • Voter Guidance: Direct voters to the appropriate voting booth or station.

  • Voter Assistance: Provide support to voters who require assistance.

  • Curbside Voting: Facilitate curbside voting by checking in voters and delivering voting machines to those unable to enter the polling location.

  • Ballot Management: Cancel surrendered ballots.

  • Paperwork Collection: Gather and organize all required paperwork at the end of Election Day for submission to the elections office.

  • Equipment Breakdown: Disassemble polling equipment, pack it securely, and place it back in the designated racks.

  • Return of Materials: Return all paperwork and election equipment to the elections office.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter (if required by local jurisdiction) or 16 years of age and work the polls with permission from a legal guardian and principal.

  • Ability to attend training sessions and work long hours on Election Day.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.

The work is typically performed in an office.
