Description
Overview
LMI is seeking a UI/UX Designer to design intuitive, visually polished software experiences for the Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) business unit. The Designer will translate user needs and complex workflows into usable interfaces for mission applications, data platforms, and AI-enabled tools. The role spans user research, information architecture, interaction design, visual design, prototyping, usability testing, and collaboration with developers through production delivery. This position requires an active Secret clearance.
The Designer will create a consistent experience across integrated applications, including shared navigation, a common entry point, and reusable interface components. The ideal candidate combines strong visual design with evidence-based user experience practices and can simplify complex tasks without obscuring information users need to make decisions.
LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.
Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government efficiently and effectively. This is a remote position requiring an active Secret security clearance. Periodic travel may be required for user research, design workshops, demonstrations, and customer engagements. Any classified work must be performed at approved facilities.
Responsibilities
- Conduct user interviews, workflow observations, and discovery sessions with operational users and stakeholders; translate findings into prioritized user needs, journey maps, and design requirements.
- Develop information architecture, navigation structures, user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity interfaces, and interactive prototypes for web-based applications and integrated platforms.
- Design dashboards, data tables, search experiences, forms, and approval workflows that make complex information understandable and support efficient task completion.
- Create and maintain a shared design system covering typography, layout, color, components, interaction patterns, and usage guidance across products.
- Design complete interaction states, including loading, empty, error, permission, confirmation, and degraded-connectivity conditions, with clear feedback and recovery paths.
- Plan and conduct usability testing; document findings, prioritize improvements, and evaluate task completion, errors, and user feedback across design iterations.
- Apply accessibility practices to layouts, contrast, keyboard interactions, focus states, and interface content; coordinate implementation and validation with engineering and testing teams.
- Work with product managers, developers, platform engineers, and cybersecurity personnel to align designs with mission priorities, technical constraints, access controls, and delivery schedules.
- Provide annotated designs, component specifications, assets, and acceptance criteria; review implemented interfaces and resolve usability and visual-quality issues before release.
- Present design recommendations and tradeoffs to customers and leadership, maintain version-controlled design artifacts, and improve delivered products based on user feedback.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Active Secret security clearance, with the ability to maintain the clearance throughout employment.
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in UI/UX design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related field, including design of software applications.
- Bachelor’s degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, user experience, visual design, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- A portfolio demonstrating user research, interaction design, visual design, and contribution to delivered software products. Sanitized case studies or authorized walkthroughs are acceptable for restricted work.
- Proficiency with Figma or comparable interface-design and prototyping tools, including reusable components, responsive layouts, and interactive prototypes.
- Experience conducting user research and usability testing and translating findings into design decisions and measurable improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to design complex application workflows, information-dense interfaces, and consistent navigation; create or maintain reusable design systems.
- Experience collaborating with software developers, documenting interaction behavior, and reviewing implemented interfaces. Familiarity with accessibility and responsive design practices.
- Strong communication, facilitation, organization, and independent problem-solving skills, with the ability to work across a distributed team and support periodic travel.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience designing software for military, federal, national security, or other regulated environments.
- Experience designing unified interfaces across multiple applications, role-based workspaces, data and analytics platforms, or AI-enabled tools.
- Experience with operational dashboards, geospatial interfaces, robotics or autonomous-system applications, or workflows used under time and connectivity constraints.
- Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and component-based front-end frameworks sufficient to collaborate effectively with developers; production software development is not required.
- Experience supporting Agile delivery, maintaining design work in product backlogs, and collaborating through tools such as GitLab, Jira, or comparable platforms.
- Experience designing for federal accessibility requirements and working with accessibility specialists to validate delivered interfaces.
