Description
The Commissioning Engineer – Professional Level is responsible for the commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and performance validation of Dematic automated material handling systems at customer sites. The role requires strong technical ownership, independent problem-solving, and close collaboration with Controls Engineering, Project Management, Software, Electrical, Mechanical, and customer teams.
The Commissioning Engineer will work primarily on complex automation systems, including conveyor and Xbelt Cross-Belt Sorter solutions, ensuring that systems are installed, configured, tested, and commissioned in accordance with Dematic standards, project requirements, and commissioning procedures.

We offer:
- Lead and execute onsite commissioning activities for Dematic automation systems and material handling solutions.
- Perform system startup, functional testing, troubleshooting, tuning, and performance validation.
- Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, network, field device, sensor, scanner, and automation-related issues.
- Analyze system behavior and identify root causes of commissioning and performance issues.
- Support execution of system validation, throughput testing, reliability testing, and customer acceptance activities.
- Coordinate commissioning activities with Controls Engineering, Software, Electrical, Mechanical, Project Management, and customer teams.
- Ensure all system modifications and commissioning activities follow established CoE processes, standards, and documentation requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to other Commissioning Engineers and onsite resources when required.
- Communicate system status, technical risks, blockers, and progress to project and engineering leadership.
- Maintain accurate commissioning documentation, punch lists, test results, and issue tracking.
- Support project teams during Go-Live, SAT, and post-Go-Live stabilization activities.
- Identify opportunities to improve commissioning processes, system reliability, and overall project execution.
- Travel extensively (90-100%) to customer sites throughout North America, with occasional international travel as required.
Tasks and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls, commissioning, or material handling systems.
- Strong understanding of PLC-controlled automation systems.
- Experience troubleshooting industrial networks, sensors, scanners, VFDs, motors, and other automation components.
- Ability to read and understand electrical drawings, controls documentation, and system architecture.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex systems independently.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced customer-site environment with changing priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively to customer sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLCs and Studio 5000.
- Experience with automated material handling systems, sortation, conveyors, or cross-belt sorters.
- Experience with industrial Ethernet and fieldbus technologies such as EtherNet/IP and PROFINET.
- Experience with scanners, vision systems, photo-eyes, encoders, and other industrial sensors.
- Previous experience supporting system Go-Live and customer acceptance testing.
- Experience providing technical leadership or mentoring to other engineers.
Work Environment
This position requires significant time at customer facilities and active commissioning sites. The engineer must be comfortable working around large-scale automated material
